1. The nearness of wine brings joy near.

    So join your morning draught to your evening drinking of it.

  2. For dawn has unfurled its banners,

    and the time has come for its cups to go round.

  3. I marveled at mankind's heedlessness,

    and their forsaking life, fresh and verdant.

  4. For one group hopes for the garden of

    eternity, while another fears the blazing fire.

  5. [And all of them] forsake their share

    of life; so enjoy it on loan.

  6. Come, then pour me wine cooled by the north wind,

    pouring a radiant dawn upon the night,

  7. rose-colored and musk-scented.

    It exalts [the lowly] and enriches the poor.

  8. As though carnelian lay in its cups,

    with cupbearers scattering fragrant powder over it.

  9. Calamities lay low whoever is not

    steadfast and patient in the face of their terror.

  10. So be certain that youth will pass,

    and make the most of a brief span of it.

  11. For youth has a span

    that comes to an end and takes your joy away.
