He distracted himself from me with the sweetness of slumber,
He was distracted from me by the fragrance of meadows,
while my heart is a captive, bound to him.
While my heart remains captive, bound to him.
So, from burning anguish, the tears of my eye
So my eyes shed no tears to relieve their burning,
do not ebb, nor does sleep visit it.
Nor does sleep steal upon them.
As though dawn were a captive gone far away,
As though the dawn itself were held captive, far removed,
so it is neither unshackled nor set free.
With no release or freedom granted it.
