1. Wednesday—its sword is unsheathed

  9. There is nothing in it but hangover and wine,

and death from its intoxication, and resurrection.

  10. And conversation like the blossoms of the

iris in beauty, or scattered pearls.

  11. And a wounded wine jar, with wine flowing

from its wound, and a bubbling pot.

  12. And yours is the guileless doe, if you

wish; if you spurn her, a guileless buck.

  13. So enjoy her by day, and spend the night, O

my lord, as a bridegroom, and you are a prince.

  14. All this for two dirhams; and if you

add more, you are honored and richly favored.

  17. He gave up salt and trading in it,

for he saw this as a trade that never fails.

  18. So take us to him and make our joy complete:

a day of joy is indeed a short day.
