1. I have admitted falling short in thanking you,

For in kindness you went beyond lavish giving.

  2. And from your abundant bounty there came to me

    Vessels with slender waists,

  3. Blackened at their rears and breasts,

Black, with the lustre of steel blades upon them,

  4. As though cut from deepest darkness

    And from precious, scraped leather—

  5. Each radiant and of rare beauty,

    Green as a trimmed moustache,

  6. Bearing a mark immersed in light,

Like the face of a dinar bearing lines of script.

  7. And slender-waisted ones, like wide, dark-eyed maidens,

Their tunics tucked up, like stock flowers,

  8. Each a maiden who grew up in Jur,

    Strutting in her short tunic,

  9. Baring an unveiled fragrance,

Like a breeze from rain-drenched blossoms.

  10. With it she cools the ailments of the breast—

Sweeter than union is to one forsaken.
