Pass it around, for freedom from reproach is one of the spoils.
Indulge her, for the absence of blame is one of the spoils,
And fear no sin; you are no sinner in drinking it.
And fear no sin, for you are not to blame in this.
For there is no life but in holding fast to wine,
There is no life except in clinging to a cup of wine,
From which the young man comes away with stained wrists.
From which the youth emerges with stained elbows.
And no shade but the shade of trellised vines,
There is no shade except the shade of a lofty vine,
Where gray doves sing to you on either side.
Whose grapes will sing to you in its clusters and leaves of doves.
A sky of branches hides the sun from sight
A sky of branches that prevents the sun from being seen
Upon the earth, except like a scattering of dirhams.
On the ground except like the scattering of coins.
