1. Her brief visit brought the lovesick lover a touch of madness,

When she came late at night and greeted him from nearby.

  2. A playful woman visited an earnest man, whom

Night travel and swift-paced Arhab she-camels had toyed with.

  3. She spent the night showing him a bān tree, wondrous

In bearing freshly picked roses and red ʿanam fruit,

  4. And a face whose dawnlight made peace

With its darkness, though dawn is the enemy of darkness.

  5. And her dwelling had flourished in his heart,

Taken upon myself some of her eyelids' languor.

  9. I found comfort in a comforting apparition of her,

That outraces sleep whenever sleep draws near.

  10. And a storm-cloud whose lightning I watch,

Like fire blazing on the peaks of a lofty mountain.

  11. When it darkened, there smiled for a lightning-watcher

Its far reaches; its moods were thus at odds.

  12. As though it were a drunken man trailing his train,

So whenever startled, he unsheathed a keen, cleaving sword.

  13. Until, when thunder's tongues broke forth,

As though mingling melody with words,

  14. Then water streamed across its reaches,

And its fire blazed from every horizon.
