    a meeting place for night visitors and drinkers.

  2. A copious downpour visited it at dawn,

    with a copious outpouring of its heavy rain.

  3. There the gifts of fragrance matched one another,

    from the north and south winds.

  4. Then it split open, revealing a stream white as a slender sword,

    rippled like a snake's upturned belly.

  5. You see upon its fertile shore

    every young man eagerly seeking his livelihood,

  6. braving the north wind's chilly blasts

    and the sun's burning ember until sunset.

  7. Assailing the lured fish with doom

    is every cloak mingled with death:

  8. weighted, it hastens to sink

    empty, and floats up with a plentiful catch.

  9. And a daughter of a skilled, gifted smith,

    curved, with a sinister inner nature,

  10. as sharp as a scorpion's sting,

    set in something like the hard head of a spear.

  11. Mounting one hollow joint upon another,

    he draws it out, winged along its sides,

  12. of varied kinds and sorts,

    each one stripped of defects,

  13. in a coat of mail with tightly closed openings,

    gilded, lavishly gilded:

  14. sustenance dear to its possessor.
