1. They showed affection when they pitied a lovesick man,

    And showed estrangement when they feared a watcher.

  2. So they strung solid pearls from smiling mouths,

    And scattered liquid pearls from tearful eyes.

  3. How many have said, seeing his wisdom direct affairs,

    After encountering his bounty as it bestowed gifts:

  4. "This is the generosity of one who forgets consequences out of pride,

    And the sound judgment of one who has faced affairs as trials."

  5. O lord, in whose courtyard we see none

    Among men but those who hope or fear,

  6. But for you, gardens would not be character traits

    Of humankind, nor seas their gifts.
