1. Does mastery belong to anyone but ʿAbd al-Karīm?

He gained his excellence anew from what came before.

  2. When lightning flashes in his palm,

He pours the water of bliss over the face.

  3. His sword is rash, and yet it

Comes and goes in a gentle man's two hands.

  4. So how much blood he has shed with it,

And how many wounds he has laid open with it!

  5. His bottles are as though they were fledglings,

    Long-beaked and green-bodied.

  6. He has a palm whose movement brings comfort,

Passing over the face like a breeze.

  7. Even if it were dusky with ugliness,

It would emerge beautiful, with a clear complexion.

  8. We have enjoyed his service since he grew up,

So through him we dwell in lasting bliss.

  9. And how often we have relied on someone else,

Only to suffer agonizing torment through him.
