Has the time not come for al-Milhi to unfurl affection
Should the salt encroacher spread friendship
And fold away bitter harshness, abandonment, and rejection?
And fold harshness, bitterness, estrangement and disaffection?
Does he grow angry because I adorned Ibn Hashim’s hand
Should I resent that I adorned the palm of Hashim's son
With a bracelet of invective that gnaws at the heart, not the wrist?
With the bracelet of Hijaj that tortures the heart, not the wrist?
And I never thought Iraq’s oft-slapped man would ask me
I have never insulted Safwan of Iraq
For even slight blame of men like him, or praise.
With the likes of him little praise or much blame
Whenever Abu al-Ward strikes at him with his palm,
When Abu al-Ward takes the wine cup in his hand
I take his nape for a garden sprouting roses.
I imagine his nape a meadow growing roses
Clouds of swinging palms pour upon the back of his head,
The clouds weep their bounty on the grape arbors
Drenching it with downpours and growing wet with his blood.
Expanding them with downpours, from their sap they glisten
