1. For the lightning of yearning has indeed driven

    the clouds of streaming tears.

  2. Without it, the dwellings would have had

    no share in my tears.

  3. Polo mallets came upon it,

    playing with the kernels of hearts.

  4. When I sought al-Husayn's bounty,

    I was safe from the ravages of misfortune.

  5. The moon of bounty—rather, the lion

    of battle on the dire day.

  6. Thus his bounty-seekers are in a pasture

    made fertile by the largesse of his palm.

  7. Virtues adorned with praise,

    just as they are bare of faults.

  8. He races ahead of Rabiʿa

    in resolve and sound judgment,

  9. like a spearhead that advanced and led

    the spear with its joints aligned.

  10. Praise grew beautiful in describing him,

    so it came to him with a love lyric's beauty,

  11. with marvels that convey the essence

    of praise to the discerning.

  12. Were they to clasp a lover's ear,

    they would distract him from his beloved.
