1. Your gift has arrived, which

    is our sun after sunset.

  2. You adorned our dwelling’s horizon

with a star or meteor from it,

  3. with the daughter of noble bees,

    sister to the sweet drops,

  4. yellow-bodied, as though

    cast from molten gold.

  5. So the water of beauty, when

she shines with it, seems the water of youth.

  6. And when her fires blaze

    at night and burn fiercely,

  7. the fragrance of her smoke makes you forget

the fragrance of blended perfume or malāb.

  8. And when an illness overtakes her,

then her cure is the severing of necks.

  9. She turns the darkness from its hue,

so it returns with its veil turned white.

  10. Were it not for her wondrous deeds,

it would revert to the raven’s hue.
