and did not yield my reins to its calamities?

  2. We left religion in the keeping of people

who squandered the worthy hopes placed in it.

  3. And we sought refuge from their mosques in a monastery,

and in the bell from the sound of the call to prayer.

  4. It is wine that is noble and delightful,

and you are safe from misfortunes.

  5. And this life is cut short, yet they say:

"We have a second life to which we shall pass."

  6. So take what you see of your life's unclouded joys,

for a report of the unseen is not like seeing firsthand.

  7. Leave me, you two, to dispel my grief with the cups,

and enlist their aid against Time,

  8. and grant my soul its wishes in this world,

for I already know where I shall be tomorrow.
