1. Would you care, Ibn Ghāliya,

for wine and a singing girl,

  2. and plentiful vineyards,

    their clusters hanging within reach,

  3. and narcissus, as though it were

    gray-blue eyes gazing,

  4. and a young gazelle whose cheek

    is painted with ghāliya perfume,

  5. with an eye whose arrows

    are stained with hearts’ blood,

  6. a guileless cupbearer who mixes the

cup for us with water from a stream,

  7. and young men who, when drunk,

    assail Muʿāwiya,

  8. and tear three to shreds

    who came before him, openly?

  9. So if you obey their command,

you will don a full-length coat of mail.

  10. Hold your tongue, and do not

reject it, you son of a whore.

  11. But if you turn away, there will follow

    at your heels a rhyme from them;

  12. nor is there, for your honor, against what

    they compose, any shield.
