1. The marks of your generosity leave their mark on adversity;

    And your gracious, cheerful countenance heralds success.

  2. Your first kindness was an ʿAdawī trait,

    Speaking of ancestral generosity and telling of it,

  3. And a favor whose worth kings have heard of;

    And generosity is heard of, and favors bring renown.

  4. Why, then, has your withholding held back my fingertips,

    While the sky of your palm rains down gifts?

  5. I have a customary gift from your bounty each month;

    Nights and months have passed without it.

  6. So extend your reach through it, far toward generosity,

    So that adversity's reach within it narrows and grows short.

  7. If I have any hope besides you that I count on,

    Then I have denied your favors, which cannot be denied.
