1. My two friends, rain begins with drops,

And the smoke of passion's fire has turned to embers.

  2. So do not reproach me if I fell in love, for I

Fell in love hoping that time would favor me.

  3. But when time revealed its people's treachery to me,

I turned away from them when patience came to my rescue.

  4. For many a lover whose excuse had become clear

Then sought endurance, and patience yielded to him.

  5. Yet my heart in love was not like his heart;

So to God belongs everlasting praise, and to Him gratitude.

  6. I shall forsake the one I love as he deserves,

Even if the full moon resembled the one I love.

  7. And I am drawn to the words of the one you both already know:

Come, pour me wine, and tell me, 'It is wine.'

  8. Come, you two, pour me some of the choicest wine,

Which the praiseworthy man and the inexperienced fool shun.

  9. Decanted into a cup, its radiance seems like

The rosy flush of a cheek when drunkenness shows upon it.

  10. And if they weaken it by mixing, it evokes for us

The sheer tunics of lovers whom separation has harmed.

  11. So there is no good in closeness if ever you tire of me,

Nor is there good in a blessing accompanied by ingratitude.
