A cloud traveling by night in the deep darkness,
A caravan in the darkness of night
Near the summits of the hills.
Coming down from the peaks of hills
It came as a vast army comes,
It came like a brave, intrepid army
And scattered like grazing camels.
And dispersed like free-roaming camels
As though, with lightning smiling,
As if it and the lightning were smiling
It were a battalion with gilded banners.
A regiment with gilded banners
It drew near the earth without reserve,
It approached the land without modesty
Then wept as a lovesick lover weeps.
Then cried a wailing, anguished weeping
So the earth rejoiced in lavish bounty,
So it rejoiced at abundant favor
And wealth that holds sway over destitution.
And wealth that rules over executions
As though, in robes of honor from the clouds,
As if it were dressed in robes of clouds
It were a woman released from pilgrimage consecration, having tired of it.
Adorned, having removed the ihram
