1. Our pleasures are now close at hand,

yet are not sweet with you both far away.

  2. And the lightning's smile has stirred

the rain-clouds' tears, and they streamed.

  3. And thunder moaned until I thought

it was seeking the steady rains' sympathy.

  4. And with me is a singing-girl who gathered

life's scattered strands, and they fell into harmony,

  5. like a sun that made peace with darkness,

and a bough bearing red ʿanam fruit.

  6. And clear wine which, when it smiles,

    shows us life smiling.

  7. And fragrant herbs to delight you both,

and a drinking companion to gladden you both.

  8. And a precious beloved, marked by beauty,

    who now carries the banner.

  9. As though his brow were dawn,

    holding darkness from a forelock.

  10. And something I do not mention,

for fear I might send you both flying.

  11. When the heart's lust uses it to treat

its ailment, that ailment is ended.

  12. And were it used as kohl for the two eyes

of Muʿāwiya, they would show no restraint.

  13. So set out, both of you, and you will find a sea

of pleasures, its waves crashing together.
