تقول إذ رقدت في الفرش هل لك في
كأس تروى عظامَ الميت في الجدث
She says, lying there in bed: “Would you care for
a cup that would water the dead man’s bones in the grave?”
فقلت والقصد لا يخفى على فطنٍ
إن كان شيئاً فكأسٌ ناقصُ الثلثِ
I said—the meaning escapes no discerning mind—
“If it is anything, it is ‘cup’ with its middle third gone.”
