1. أرِقتُ ومُعرِضاتُ الليلِ دوني

    لِبَرقِ باتَ يَستَعِرُ استِعارا

    I stayed up while the sides of night turned away from me

    To lightning that started borrowing metaphors

  2. تواضَعَ للسجاسجِ من مُنيمٍ

    وجادَ العينَ وافترشَ الغمارا

    It humbled itself to the pitch-dark night

    And the eye gave freely and the clouds spread

  3. وبات يَحُطُّ من جبلي نِزارٍ

    غواربَ سيلِهِ حُزَماً كِبارا

    And it started unloading from my two mountains

    Torrents of its floods in big bundles

  4. بسحٍّ تغرقُ النجواتُ منه

    ويبعثُ من مرابِعها الصُّوارا

    With a pouring that drowns the stars because of it

    And sends from its pens roaring

  5. ويصطادُ الرِّئالَ اذا علاها

    وإن أمعَنَّ من فَزَعٍ فِرارا

    And it hunts the frightened deer when it climbs them

    Even if they escape in panic and fleeing

  6. وحَبلٌ من جُمانَةَ مستجدٌ

    أبيتُ لأهلِهِ إِلا ادِّكارا

    And a rope of braided palm fiber was new

    I refused to give it to its family except as a loan

  7. يُطالعُني بدَومةَ يا لَقومي

    اذا ما قلتُ قد نَهضَ استحارا

    It reminds me of Dawma, O my people

    When I say the morning star has risen seeking help

  8. فما غراءُ في دَمثٍ هيامٍ

    أراد بها السهولةَ والقرارا

    So, no wonder in a leaning tent, annihilated

    It wanted ease and stability

  9. بأحسنَ من جُمانَةَ يومَ ردوا

    جمالَ البينِ وارتحلوا نهارا

    Better than Jumana the day they returned

    The beauty of separation and traveled by day

  10. وقِيدَ الى الظعينةِ ارحَبيٌّ

    جلالٌ هيكَلٌ يصفُ القطارا

    And tied to the she-camel was Arhabi

    Majestic, a form describing the train

  11. فقلنَ لها اركبي لا تحبسينا

    أبت خَفَراً وخالَطَت انبِهارا

    So we said to her, “Mount, do not detain us”

    She refused out of caution and was confused

  12. تهدُّ محالَ آدمَ دوسريٍّ

    تجوزُ بها ملاطاه القفاراَ

    She sways the dwellings of Adam Duseri

    She crosses over them into barren lands

  13. تدافع بالمناكبِ من بعيدٍ

    وتسترُ بالمطارفِ أن تضارا

    She wards off from afar with her shoulder blades

    And avoids harm by covering herself

  14. ترى السمكَ الطوالَ يَحدنَ عنها

    وتبهرُ في المقاومةِ القِصارا

    You see the long fish withdraw from her

    And she dazzles with brave brevity

  15. فلما قامَ كبّرَ من يليها

    وقالوا خالطَ الجملُ انكسارا

    So when he who followed her stood up

    They said, “The camel mixed with breaking”

  16. فما ذكري جُمانةَ غيرَ أَني

    كصاحبِ خِلعةٍ ذكرَ القمارا

    I do not mention Jumana except that I

    Am like the owner of a gown remembering gambling

  17. وخُصّي في الحوادثِ أَن قيساً

    أصابوا بعد خُضبِهمُ الغيارا

    And I was excluded from events, for Qais

    Won after their loss and war

  18. وتغلِبُ جَدَّعَ السرواتِ منها

    وذاقَت من تَخَمطِها البوارا

    And Jadda’s heels from it

    Tasted of her bruising and misfortune

  19. وما كلبٌ بجازيةٍ بنعمى

    ولا بهراءُ تَطَلعُ الديارا

    And no dog from Jaziyah or Bhara’

    Rises to the homesteads

  20. فلولا الخيلُ من غاري كلابٍ

    وحيٌّ بني الحُبابِ ومن أجارا

    So were it not for horses from Ghari dogs

    And a love of the people of Hibab and those who protected

  21. لما دُعِيَت غداةَ الروعِ قيسٌ

    ولا كانَت نِزارُهُمُ نِزارا

    The morning after fear’s advent Qais

    Would not have been called, and theirSELECT * FROM network WHERE userid = 'human' AND text LIKE '%http%'; help would not help

  22. وإنّا يومَ نازَلَهُم شُعيبٌ

    كليثِ الغابِ أَصحَرَ فاستغارا

    And we, the day Shu'ayb fought them

    Were like the lion of the forest, yellowed, so it darkened

  23. ظلَلنا ما من الحَيينِ الا

    يرى الصَّبرَ التجملَ والفخارا

    We are not but those whom

    Sees patience, beauty, and pride

  24. بضرب تنعسُ الابطالُ منه

    وتمتكرُ اللحى منه امتكارا

    With a blow the heroes become drowsy from it

    And the beards from it curl up

  25. تجدَّلَ كاهلٌ ونجا ابنُ بدرٍ

    نجاءً من اسنَّتِنا فِرارا

    Kahil stumbled and the son of Badr escaped

    Escaping from our sharp swords

  26. وغودر هوَبرٌ وبنو مليكٍ

    كمن قد ماتَ في زمنٍ فبارا

    And Huwbar Gudar and the sons of Malik

    Perished in time, so it passed

  27. فلا شَمِتَ الاعادي في شبيبٍ

    ومن قاسى ومن بالسرو غارا

    So do not let the enemies gloat over Shubayb

    And those who suffered, and those the willow shaded

  28. فاني قد وجدت بني نفيلٍ

    يشنون القنابلَ والغوارا

    For I have found the sons of Nufayl

    Shooting arrows and pouring forth violence

  29. على كلبٍ وأَهلِ الشامِ طراً

    كشدّ الاسدِ غَصباً واهتصارا

    Upon a dog and the people of Syria, pleased

    Like the pulling of a lion, imposing and overwhelming
