1. ألا مَن مُبلِغٌ زَفرَ بنَ عَمروٍ

    وَخيرُ القَولِ ما نَطَقَ الحكيمُ

    O deliverer of Zufar son of 'Amr

    The best of words are those spoken by the wise

  2. ألَم تَرَ كالنعامةِ يَدَّريني

    ولم يَكُ يَدَّري مثلي الحليمُ

    Do you not see me shunned like an ostrich

    Yet none shun the mild-mannered like me

  3. اتختُلُني وتحسَبُني كخِشفٍ

    من الغِزلانِ اغفلَ ما يريمُ

    I am mocked and thought a mere gazelle

    The brave ignore what I endure

  4. يُقحّمُ فيالخبارِ ويختليني

    وضغثُ المختلي كَلأٌ وَخيمُ

    He interferes with news and mocks me

    The mockery of the wretched is painful and bleak

  5. لَعلَّ الصيدَ سوف يصيرُ شئناً

    يُبيّننُ حينَ يَنهِم أو يقومُ

    Perhaps the hunt will become something

    That shows itself when it pounces or rises

  6. هِزَبراً ترهَبُ الأَقرانُ منهُ

    من اللائي يبيتُ لها نئيمُ

    A terrifying sight that makes peers recoil

    From those who spend the night wailing for it

  7. ابنَّ موارِدَ الغَمرينِ عَصراً

    وطَوراً في مساكِنهِ القَصيمُ

    He roams the meadows of Al-Ghamrin

    At times dwelling in his barren abodes

  8. أذلك أم رياضةُ راسِ قرمٍ

    تخمَّط وهو تركبُهُ الهمومُ

    Is this but an amusement for the leader of Quraysh

    Burdened with worries, his brow furrowed

  9. من العُصلِ الشوابِكِ نَشرُ حربٍ

    عَلندَى المنكبينِ بهِ العصيمُ

    From the firm knotted bows, the unleashing of war

    Against the resilient, on them the blame lies

  10. اذا سَمِعَت له القَعدانُ عزفاً

    ذَرَفنَ وَهُنَّ من فَزَعٍ كظومُ

    When the sedentary hear his battle cry

    They tremble and cower in tremendous fright

  11. مُعرّى فهو يربضُ حيث أمسى

    من الاهمالِ تعرفُهُ النجومُ

    Bared, he crouches wherever night befalls

    By neglect, the stars know him

  12. تبيت الغُولُ تهزجُ أن تراه

    وصنج الجنَ من طَرب يهيمُ

    Ghouls wander howling should they see him

    And jinn rejoice in ecstatic delirium

  13. أبيّ ماي قادُ الدهرَ قسراً

    ولا لهوى المصرِّفِ يَستقيمُ

    My father who led fate forcibly

    His passion unbridled, refusing compliance

  14. تصدُّ عَضارِطَ الركبانِ عَنهُ

    وشَهراً من تَخَمُّطِهِ يَصُومُ

    Balking the riders' steeds away from him

    And fasting a month from his fervent rage

  15. أنوفٌ حينَ يغضبُ مستعزّ

    جنوحٌ يستبدُّ به الغريمُ

    When enraged, his nostrils flare

    As passion seizes him vehemently

  16. وقبلَ ابنِ النعامةِ كنت نِكلاً

    ملداً حين تنتطحُ الخصومُ

    Before the son of the ostrich I was hapless

    Subdued when adversaries clash

  17. فما أدنى نعامَةَ من أبينَا

    اذا عُدَّ الخؤولَةُ والعمومُ

    How inferior is the ostrich to my father

    When ancestry and unclehood are counted

  18. فخالي الشيخُ صعصعةُ بنُ سعدٍ

    وتننميني لاكرمِها تميمُ

    My venerable uncle is Sa'd's son Sa'sa'ah

    And Tamim's glory brings me prestige

  19. وترفِدُني الاراقمُ كلَّ رفدٍ

    وشيبانُ بنُ ثعلبةًَ القرومُ

    The banners of 'Araquim all rally to me

    As do Shuayban son of Thu'alabah's cavalry

  20. ابي عنه وَرِثتُ سوامَ مَجدٍ

    وكلُّ أبِ سيورِثُ ما يسومُ

    From him I inherited glory's summit

    And every father bequeaths what he holds dear

  21. فما آلُ الحُبابِ الى نفيلٍ

    اذا عُدّ الممهلُ والقديمُ

    But Al-Hubab's progeny are now worthless

    When the tardy and old are counted

  22. كأنَّ أبا الحُبابِ الى نفيلٍ

    حمارٌ عَضَّهُ فَرَسٌ عَذومُ

    As if Abu Al-Hubab's progeny are now

    A donkey bitten by a vicious stallion

  23. بنى لك عامِرٌ وبنو كلابٍ

    أروماً ما يوازِنُهُ أرومُ

    A'mir and Bana Kilab have built for you

    A lofty edifice that equals no other

  24. اذا عدَّت هوازنُ أو سُليمٌ

    فأنتم فَرعُها الشرفُ الصميمُ

    When Hawazin or Sulaym are counted

    You are their noblest scion, their essence

  25. وَجَدنا الصعقَ كبشَ بني نَفيلٍ

    حرى بالمجدِ قد علمَ العليمُ

    We found Sa'q like a ram of Bani Nufayl

    Worthy of glory, the Wise One knows

  26. وكان اذا يَعَضُّ سفيه قومٍ

    عصى الراقينَ في الحُمة السليمُ

    When he would bite some foolish folk

    He would butt the riders in the protected herd

  27. بعضةِ رأسِ اقرعَ ذي لغامٍ

    يُسكَرُ أو يسَنَّيهِ العليمُ

    With the bite of a bald scabby cheeked lout

    He knocks him senseless, the Wise One knows
