فَحمٌ كيومِ الفراقِ تُشعِلُهُ
نارٌ كنارِ الفراقِ في الكَبِدِ
Charcoal, like the day of parting, is kindled
by a fire like parting’s fire within the liver.
أسودُ قد صارَ تحت حمرته
مثلَ العيونِ اكتحلنَ بالرَمَدِ
Black it has become beneath its redness,
like eyes that have taken ophthalmia for kohl.
