  1. A dark bay, with broad bands across his coat—

    gray-white along the sinews of his shank.

  2. He seems wrapped in a robe of Coptic cloth,

    its folds drawn tight by his girth.

  3. His black is like night in all its darkness,

    and his white like dawn in all its radiance.

  4. His hide is flawless, his bloodlines noble;

    his character bears clear witness to his lineage.
