وعفرناةٍ ضبارمةٍ
صب مصب على أحنه
With raging fury and ferocity
He pours wrath upon their necks
وارد الأكباد ذي لبدٍ
خادرٌ يستن في أرنه
Severing livers with sharp blades
Lurking, waiting in his lair
هرت عصل خواضمه
سهكٌ في عرفه أسنه
His claws shred their flesh
A lion in his den, baring fangs
تصبح الآساد نابيةً
عن مغانيه وعن قطنه
In the morning the lions prowl
Forgetting their songs and rest
أوثقت للبطش آلته
فكفته السعي في مهنه
He readies his weapons for slaughter
His hands busied with their work
حرب الأبطال عادته
واغتيال الشوس من سننه
Heroic war is his custom
Ambushing the heedless, his way
وإذا غطت بلا عمه
واستحر الزأر عن دمنه
When night falls without moonlight
And the snarling grows loud seeking blood
غال قلب المرء يبعد عن
أرضه ما جال في أذنه
A man's heart wanders far
From his land though near to his ear
مخطف الأعجاز جوشنه
صدق أوفى على قننه
Vanquisher of the valiant, his armor
True and loyal to its links
كأداة الحرب هامته
وكراءٍ شخت محتضنه
As a tool of war his resolve
And shelter, hardening its embrace
تقصف المران شكته
ويكل السيف عن حتنه
Shattering the spears, his power
While the swords fail their sharpness
وإذا أجفانه ومضت
كوميض البرق في مزنه
When his eyelids flash
Like lightning flickering in its cloud
لم ترغ عن عين لامحها
دون سل الروح من بدنه
The eyes that glimpsed them will not neglect
To drain the soul from their bodies
كل ذي روح يدين له
ويخاف القرب من سننه
All with souls are indebted to him
And fear approaching his ways
حين تمت منه مدته
وانقضى ما امتد من زمنه
When his time has passed
And the days of his life are done
غاله خرقٌ توسطه
نشزٌ أوفى على شزنه
There remains of him a hole
A loyal companion to its seam
جعلت فيه فريسته
كجثوم الطير في وكنه
He made his prey within
Like a bird trapped in its nest
فسرى والحين يقدمه
غير مطويٍّ على ظننه
Then he crept up and pounced
Not heeding their cries
وأتى يبغي فريسته
فوهى وانهد من ركنه
He came seeking his prey
But they were wary and took heed
وغدا القناص فانتظموا
بين متنيه إلى ذقنه
The hunters gathered together
From his chin to his waist
بسهامٍ ألحفته كما
تدرج المقبور في كفنه
With arrows surrounding him
As a shrouded body is wrapped
فثوى والترب مسكنه
نائي الأوطان عن وطنه
He fell, and the earth became his home
Far from his lands and his home
