1. لا شيء أحسن يا قنّاص من صُرَدٍ

    تلهيك في طَرَدٍ منها عن الطَرَدِ

    Nothing is better, O hunter, than a rifle

    That distracts you with its firing from firing.

  2. مثل السماني إذا ما طل

    لقتله طاوياً منه على ضَمَدِ

    Like a swift bird when it appears

    Bending to kill it on its perch.

  3. ذي منسر كنواة القسب منعوج

    عن مثل سم المعا للطعم مزدرد

    With a bent beak like the tip of a reed stalk

    Unlike the poisonous sting of a scorpion.

  4. وهامة فخمة سكا مدبجة

    تبدو كطخيانة أوفت على جدد

    And a magnificent tufted forehead

    That appears like an ostrich over its eggs.

  5. وأظفر كسُلّاةٍ معطفةٍ

    أشدَّ من لذع حر النار في الجسد

    And claws like covered shears

    More painful than the burn of hot fire on the skin.

  6. عليه من برده وَشيٌ له كَفَفٌ

    مثل التي شدَّت من الزرد

    It has a sling for it, bands that grip it

    Like those that were braided from silk.

  7. مثل من ترجيع واشمه

    أو كالسهاد ثوى في جفن ذي سهد

    Like one who boasts of his tracking skills

    Or a sleepless one with drooping eyelids.

  8. أو كالكتاب الذي أنضاه كاتبه

    وناط منعرجاً منه بمطَّرد

    Or like a book its writer has edited

    And connected its chapters in order.

  9. إذا تَقَنَّص عصفوراً فاورده

    حوض المنية عن أَيدٍ وعن جَلَدِ

    When it hunts a bird and brings it down

    To the basin of death without hands or skin.

  10. رأيت مثلين ذا بالقهر يغلب ذا

    مُحَكَّماً فيه حكمَ الليث في النَقَدِ

    I saw one endowed with conquering power

    Judging with the justice of a lion in war.

  11. فيستدلَّ بما أبداه من عَجَبٍ

    على مقادير صنع الواحد الأَحَدِ

    He deduces by what he shows of wonder

    The measures of the working of the One, the Absolute.
