1. Do you wonder that I endured injury

though I was a discerning man who kept his composure?

  2. For, praise be to God, I am no man of feeble judgment:

I saw clearly and did not miss the dividing line of right.

  3. But I weighed matters and found

nothing better than forbearance and overlooking offense.

  4. I swear, were it not for the affection once between us,

and a bond whose foundations refused to come apart,

  5. and your bright days that came before,

which you pledged to me in generous kindness,

  6. I would have readied the young she-camel of estrangement and mounted her,

traveling far away wherever on earth I found a road.

  7. I would have honored myself, as honor is my due;

you would not have seen me humbled, were it not for love.

  8. I ranged through the reaches of youth, seeking a brother

who would help when care beset a man.

  9. A brother like Abu Amr—and with one like him

a free man is clothed and wrapped in glory.

  10. May God reward Uthman al-Khuraymi with the best reward

ever given a generous, bountiful companion.

  11. He was a brother who, when I approached him with affection, gave me

greater sincerity; and when I turned away, he longed for me and drew near.

  12. A brother who never betrayed me in life; nor did I lie awake

fearing that enemies might turn him against me.

  13. When they tried to sway him with slander, they confronted

a hill that refused to be shaken.

  14. He let me decide concerning his wealth and his word,

and took up the keen Za'bi spear on my behalf.

  15. Throughout his life he spared me the coldness of brothers,

and left behind a legacy of all he had so generously given.

  16. He went before me, and I was left after him,

a captive, shackled by the terrors men bring.

  17. He remained worthy of praise; he never marred his kindness.

I never hated him throughout my life, nor did he hate me.

  18. And you were a brother who, had your bond endured,

would have helped when evil stirred and rushed forth.

  19. But slanderers changed you, until it was as though

you saw me as a threatening foe advancing before your eyes.
