1. That you spent the night distraught robbed me of sleep,

    shackled by sorrow, all aflame,

  2. over the death of one—you had not realized your hopes

    in him, nor gained through him the end you sought.

  3. How deeply we feared that we would see his day—

    if only what is decreed could be turned aside!

  4. Yet our anxious fears came to nothing,

    and God's command came to pass.

  5. So endure His trial patiently, and you will find contentment;

    for true patience is at the first shock.
