مَن كان مُرْتَدِياً بالعقل مُتَّزِراً
بالعِلم مُلْتَفِعاً بالفضل والأدبِ
Whoever is clad in reason, girded with it,
cloaked in knowledge, virtue, and refinement,
فقد حوى شَرَفَ الدنيا وإن صَفِرَتْ
كَفّاه من فِضّة فيها ومن ذَهَبِ
has gained the world’s honor, even though
his two hands be empty of its silver and gold.
هو الغنيُّ وإنْ لم يُمْسِ ذا نَشَب
وهو النَّسيبُ وإنْ لم يُمْسِ ذا نسَبِ
He is rich, though he possesses no wealth,
and noble-born, though he possesses no lineage.
