أَما لهذا البِعاد مِن أمَدِ

فيُطفِئَ القربُ لاعِجَ الكَمَدِ

Is there no end to this separation?

Distance extinguishes closeness, not kindling embers,

ويجمع الدَّهر شملَ مُنفردٍ

أصبح يبكي لنأْي مُنفردِ

And time brings together those now parted,

Who weep for their solitude when alone.

فوالّذي راعَني بِبَينِكُمُ

فَعيلَ صَبري وخانَني جلَدي

By Him who tended me among you,

My patience is frail and my composure betrays me,

ما أَتّقي الموتَ عند ذِكرِكُمُ

إلاّ بوَضْعي يدي على كبِدي

I fear not death when I think of you,

Save that I place my hand upon my heart.

وطالما بِتُّ فيكمُ قَلِقاً

أقطع ليل التَّمام بالسَّهَد

How often I’ve lain awake among you, restless,

Spending the night sleepless,

فما درى النّاسُ ما أُكاتِمُهُ

ولا شكوْتُ الهَوى إلى أَحَدِ

None know what I conceal,

Nor have I complained of passion to anyone.
