With greater yearning for what she left behind on the day she departed—
the nest, a life of contentment, and companions—
my youth passes from me toward one whose absence
is my death, and meeting whom, should I die, would raise me.
What becomes of one whose intimate companions withdraw,
leaving him to spend morn and eve among the worst of company?
Indeed, the face of a savage lion baring its teeth
is lovelier than the face of a grinning enemy.
He reaches out a hand, gesturing a greeting;
justice has ruled concerning it: if only it were held out to a sawyer.
So here I remain until God, in His bounty, gladdens me
with your nearness, keeping no company with humankind.
