لائمٌ للمحبِّ غيرُ ملائمْ

هامَ قلبي وقلبُه غيرُ هائمْ

The blamer blames the lover unjustly,

While my heart and his heart are distracted.

لم يزلْ واجداً عليَّ لأَنَّني

بتُّ للوجدِ واجداً وهو عادمْ

He has always found fault with me because

I pine for love while he lacks it.

أَغتدي للهوى سليباً سليماً

وهو سالٍ من الصّبابةِ سالمْ

I roam freely for love, safe and sound,

While he flows with youth, secure.

ناصحي غيرُ عالمٍ بالذي بي

ومن الغَبْنِ ناصحٌ غيرُ عالمْ

My advisor knows not what is within me,

And an advisor without knowledge brings loss.

خَلِّ يا خلُّ في الهوى عذلَ صّبٍ

واجدٍ من لواذعِ العذلِ واجمْ

Leave off, O companion, blaming a passionate lover,

And one afflicted by the agonies of passion.

لا ترعْ بالملامِ مَنْ ليس يخشى

في سبيلِ الغرامِ لومةَ لائمْ

Do not fault one who does not fear

The blame of the critic in the path of love.

لا تظنّ الهوى مفارقَ قلبي

فهو وصفٌ كما علمتَ ملائمْ

Do not think that love has left my heart,

For it is a trait, as you know, suited to me.

لفؤادي ضمانةٌ وغرامٌ

أَتلَفاهُ بلا ضمينٍ وغارمْ

My heart has a pledge and passion

That have ruined it without a companion or lover.

نارُ وجدي دخانُها في شحوبي

وفؤادي صالٍ ووجهيَ ساهمْ

The fire of my love, its smoke is in my pallor,

And my heart is aflame while my face is ashen.

قد كتمتُ الهوى وباحَ به الدَّم

عُ فسرِّي ما بينَ مُفشٍ وكاتم

I concealed my love but my blood betrayed it -

Explain what is between one who reveals and one who hides!

من لصَبٍّ رَمَتْهُ مُقلةُ رئمٍ

حبُّهُ من ضميرهِ غيرُ رائمْ

One struck by the arrows of misery,

His love does not leave his soul.

لجفونِ البيضِ الصّوارمِ بيضٌ

لم تزلْ في الجفونِ وهي صوارمْ

The white, piercing eyelids have a whiteness

That has not ceased to be piercing.

وبوادي العُذيبِ أُدْمُ ظباءٍ

فاتكات لحاظها بالضراغمْ

And in the valley of torment, startled gazelles

Whose glances are adorned with kohl.

وبنفسي ظامي الوشاحِ على عذ

بِ لماهُ قلبي المعذَّبُ حائمْ

And in myself, wearing darkness over suffering,

My tortured heart confused.

فحمَى العشقِ آهلُ الرَّبعِ منه

وحمى الصّبرِ عنه عافي المعالمْ

So the passion's fever rid the dwellers of the ruins,

While the fever of patience immunized those of noble traits.

ساحرٌ طرفُهُ وساجِ وإنِّي

لتمنيِّهِ ساهرُ الطّرفِ ساجمْ

Bewitching are his eyes, and the place between his eyes,

And I stay up nightlong, desirous, sleepless.

قرَّبَ الطيفُ وصلَهُ وهو ناءٍ

وأَتاني مستيقظاً وهو نائمْ

The phantom brought me his apparition while he slept,

And came to me while I was awake and he slept.

أَنصفاني رأَيتُما قطُّ مظلو

ماً قضى نحبَهُ على حبِّ ظالمْ

Be fair - have you ever seen an oppressed one

Whose love was ended by the love of an oppressor?

حبّذا والحبيبُ في الوهلِ منّي

راغبٌ والحسودُ بالكرهِ راغمْ

Good fortune, while the beloved avoids me,

Is eager, while the envious hates me against his will.

وسقى اللهُ عيشنا المتقضِّي

ورعى اللهُ عهدَنا المتقادمْ

May God water our life which flows together,

And may God shepherd our old covenant.

حين عصرُ الصِّبا كحاليَ حالٍ

وهو في مَرِّهِ كأَحلامِ حالمْ

When the days of youth were like my state,

And it was like the dreams of a dreamer.

فليالي العراقِ بيضٌ من البي

ضِ غوانٍ من الغَواني اغونم

So the nights of Iraq are white like the white

Of protected gazelles, desired.

وزماني مساعدٌ ورفيقي

في الهوى مُسعدٌ ودهري مسالم

My times are favorable and my companion

In love is fortunate, and my fate is peaceful.

ومنادي المُنى مُجاوبُهُ الاس

عافُ والسؤولُ للنّجاحِ منادمْ

The caller of wishes responds to me,

And the questioner of success is my boon companion.

ومن الأكرمين كلُّ نديمٍ

لستُ من قربهِ مدى الدَّهر نادمْ

Of the generous, each boon companion

Whom I do not regret as time passes.

ما فقدنا السرورَ إلاَّ هدانا

كلُّ هادٍ لما بنى الهمُّ هادمْ

We lost no joy except sorrow guided us -

Every guide to what the worries demolished.

وبذاكَ الجناب أَوطانُ أَوطا

ري كما أَنّها مغاني المغانمْ

By that noble one, my homelands

Are like the most precious gains.

ومَرادُ المُرادِ بالعرفِ زاهٍ

وَمرَاحُ المِراحِ بالعَرفِ فاغمْ

The attainment of hopes by nobility

And the comfort of worries happily obtained.

ومبيتي ما بينَ كأَسٍ وثغرٍ

راشفاً منهما متى شئتُ لائمْ

Its sun shone upon us, my father Nasr's aid,

And the emblems of the highest glory were completed through him.

وردُ خدٍ ندٍ وغُصنُ قوامٍ

ذا جنيٌّ غضٌّ وذلكَ ناعمْ

With resolution he attains every request -

By my life, how many resolute ones desired the resolute!

فأَنا اليومَ بالشّآمِ وحيدٌ

لِسنَا البارقِ العراقيِّ شائمْ

The words of Judge and the opinion of Qays,

And the stepping forth of Ali and the generosity of Ka'b and Hatim.

لا ودودٌ على وفائي مقيمٌ

لا وفي بشرطِ وُدِّيَ قائمْ

His palm distributed treasures ungrudgingly

To the needy, destroying wealth through treasures.

أَبداً بين هِمَّتي وزماني

في اقتراحي وفي اطِّراحي ملاحمْ

It gave good tidings to people seeking refuge

Of lasting goodness and lasting triumph.

عظُمتْ همّتي وها أَنا استص

غرُ في المطلبِ العظيمِ العظائمْ

A brilliant rising, a clear beginning,

A long arm, an open palm, and a smiling mouth.

ما نجا من مطاعِن العجزِ راضٍ

بملاهٍ من عيشهِ ومطاعمْ

Abundant gifts, a torrent of hands,

And excellent qualities and pure determinations.

مبتَغى قلبي المشوق ببغدا

دَ وجسمي نائي المحلِّ بجاسمْ

His palms guaranteed the fulfillment of hopes

And the establishment of aspirations, lasting.

ليتَ شعري متى يُبشِّرُ عنّي

أَصدقائي فيها بأَنيَ قادمْ

In piety he has the legacy of the devout -

His excellent qualities are far from all blame.

ما لشَملي بها سِوى أَمرِ مولا

ي عماد الدِّينِ المملّكِ ناظمْ

No gardens bloomed with agreeable qualities

Whose plants were adorned with agreeable qualities.

واحدُ العصرِ ثالثُ الشَّمسِ والبد

رِ وثاني الحيا بغيرِ مُزاحمْ

Their scattering lights outshone

And illuminated the darkest of clouds.

إنْ يكن مانح المراحمِ بالجو

دِ فبالبأس مانِعٌ للمحارمْ

Like necklaces hanging, with hearts

Of passion, branches, and doves.

شَيَّدَ المجدَ وهو في المهِ شدَّتْ

بتمامِ العُلى عليه التَّمائمْ

With the song of leaves the boughs trill

And the doves' lament is a funeral dirge.

وهو بالحزمِ مُدرِكٌ كلَّ سُؤلٍ

ولَعَمْري كم حازماً رامَ حازِمْ

Among the excellent qualities of the victorious are more wondrous

And their beautiful deeds are most generous.

نُطقُ قُسٍ ورأي قيسٍ وإقدا

مُ عليٍ وجودُ كعبٍ وحاتمْ

The Sunna of law and the religion of guidance

And the state of Hashim stand straight through them.

وندىً فرَّقَ الخزائنَ مقتا

داً إلى المُعدِمِ الغِنَى بالخزائمْ

The celestial sphere of opinion stands among their resolute ones,

The kings among them by the foundations of kingship.

بَشَّرَ البِشرُ منه كلَّ مُرّجٍ

دِيمةَ الخيرِ بالنَّجاح الدائمْ

They have shown clemency and pardoning

Until they established sanctity for sinners.

طلعةٌ طلقةٌ وباعٌ طويلٌ

ويدٌ بَسْطَةٌ وثغرٌ باسمْ

How the eyes of nights had wept and now

Today they smile with laughter!

وعطايا غُزْرٌ وغُرُّ أَيادٍ

وسجايا زُهْرٌ وبيضُ عزائمْ

By the sun of the world, through my father Nasr's aid

The darkness of oppressions was dispelled from us.

كفلتْ كفُّهُ بنُجْحِ الأَماني

ونُشور الآمالِ وهي دمائمْ

Possessing attainment for each respected attainer

And cure for the hopes of the hopeful, lasting.

فلهُ في التُّقى مآثرُ نزَّهْ

نَ سجاياهُ عن جميع المآثمْ

May you be ransomed, O victorious ones, by an obedient one

Whose order no order could disobey.

ما رياضٌ فاحتْ لطائفِ أَنفا

سِ صَباها لطائفٌ ولطائمْ

He who erased the exemplary practices of good

And has not ceased to treat alike the equal.

أَظهرَتْ سِرَّ نشرِها فكأَنْ قد

مشت الرِّيحُ بينها بالنَّمائمْ

How many wicked ones repelled! How many ambushes set!

In hellfire and ungrateful, attacking me!

وشي أَنوارها المفوَّفُ أَسدى

وأَنارتْ فيه أَكفُّ الغمائمْ

O son of one whose rule was most excellent over people

And who summoned to account those hoping from his wealth!

كقدودٍ تعلَّقتْها قلوبٌ

ذاتُ شجوٍ غصونُها والحمائمْ

I wander freely, composing your praise in lofty verses,

And capturing the patterns of eulogy in verse.

فبِشَدْوِ الغِناءِ للوُرقِ أَعرا

سٌ وبالنَّوحِ للحَمامِ مآتمْ

Without falling short for one seeking to know you,

For the destitute in their destitution are humbled.

من سجايا بني المُظفَّر أَبهى

ومساعيهمُ الحِسان الكرائمْ

Every hopeful in you remains successful

In sincerity of hopes - while any fault-finder is repelled.

ما استقامتْ إلاّ بهم سنَّةُ الشَّر

عِ ودينُ الهدى ودولةُ هاشمْ

Through loyalty is strength for the loyal,

And through defenders, the rising of the loyal.

واستوتْ في خَضارِم الرأي فلكُ ال

ملك منهم على مَراسي المراسمْ

أَحسنوا العفو والتجاوزَ حتَّى

مَهّدوا حرمةً لأَهلِ الجرائمْ

كم بكتْ أَعينُ اللَّيالي فعادتْ

وهيَ اليومَ ضاحكاتُ المباسمْ

وبشمسِ الورى عليَّ أَبي نَصْ

رٍ تجلّى عنّا ظلامُ المظالمْ

ذو نوالٍ لكلِّ عافٍ معافٍ

ولسقمِ الرَّجا مداوٍ مداومْ

ففداكم بني المظفر عاصٍ

لم يطعْ أَمره من الأَمرِ عاصمْ

من محا سنَّةَ المحاسن بالشَّ

رِ وما زالَ للمساوي مُساومْ

كم رديءٍ رَدٍ وساعٍ كمينٍ

في سعيرٍ وجاحدٍ فيَّ جاحمْ

يا ابنَ مَنْ حكمهُ على الخَلْق طرّاً

وعلى مالهِ مُرجِّيهِ حاكمْ

أَنا راقٍ في هُضب علياكَ مدحاً

ولطرزِ الثَّناءِ بالنظمِ راقمْ

غير قاصٍ عن قاصدٍ لكَ عُرفاً

لفقارِ افتقارهِ هو قاصمْ

لم يزلْ فائزاً بصدقِ الأَماني

كلُّ راجٍ لظنّه فيكَ راجمْ

بالمُوالين قوَّةٌ للموالي

والخوافي بها نهوضُ القَوادمْ
