أَهْجو متاعي بألفِ بيتٍ
إذْ رَدَّ بَيْتي بلا متاعِ
I satirize my possessions in a thousand verses,
for they have left my house without a possession;
وأَضيع المالِ ما تَلاشى
بالمهرِ والمهدِ والرَضاعِ
and wealth is never more utterly squandered
than on bride-price, cradle, and nursing.
