When youth left Shalawi
With burdens of sorrow, he met ruin,
And fate made me drink bitterness undiluted
Giving joy to others, happiness explicit.
I ceased to depend on wishes
And began to embrace despair as comfort,
And pitched my tent in my people's abode
Saying to the one who blamed me: Rest your camel.
That was because before this
I wished and was boastful in vain.
