قلبيْ لعهدِ السرورِ ناسِ
والحزنُ مُلقٍ بهِ المرَاسي
My heart yearns for the days of joy
While sorrow casts its shadow upon me
وما سِوى التّربِ نَعلُ رِجلي
ولا سِوى الشّعرِ تاجُ راسي
Except for dust, my feet have no shoes
Except for hair, my head has no crown
أُرْجي معاشاً إلى لباسٍ
بلا معاشٍ ولا لِباسِ
I hope for livelihood and clothes
With no livelihood or clothes
يغصُّ بالقارِ جَوفُ دَنّي
ويسكنُ العنكبوتُ كاسي
My belly rumbles with hunger
And spiderwebs cover my goblet
فكَم تزوجتُ بنتَ كرمٍ
صلّى عليها أبو نواسِ
How many noble girls have I married?
