I lowered my eyes from one whose figure was a supple bough;
my heart renounced my longing, though it is my very soul.
Had my heart followed passion, and my soul said,
“Then I shall depart,” my heart would have replied, “Depart!”
My thoughts roam from the extremity of my longing;
I fold away my anguish and tell them, “Roam.”
For a gazelle my eye has wept and said,
“I shall wail until the Resurrection.” I said, “Then wail.”
And that is to fill East and West
with waftings of the evening draught and the morning cup.
