تَرَكت الحب لاعن عجز طول

وَلا عَن لَوم واش أَو رَقيب

I abandoned love not out of inability's frustration,

Nor from blame, gossip or a chaperone.

وَلا من رَوع زفرات التَصابي

وَلا مِن خَوف أَجفان الحَبيب

Nor from fear of lovers' tears,

Nor dread of parting and the beloved's estrangement,

وَلا حذر الفراق وَخَوف هَجر

بِه تَجرى المَدامِع كَالصَبيب

At which tears flow like pouring rain.

But I chose chastity for my soul,

وَلكني اِصطَفَيت عَفاف نَفس

تقر بصفوه عَين الاريب

To comfort the suspicious eye with its purity.

That is because I live in an age of a people

وَذاكَ لِأَنَّني في عَصر قوم

بِهِ التَهذيب كَالأَمر العَجيب

To whom refinement is a wondrous matter.
