يَعُدّونَ لي مالاً فَهُم يَحسُدونَني
وَذو المالِ قَد يُغرى بِهِ كُلُّ مُعدَمِ
They imagine I have wealth, and so they envy me,
Yet he with riches can be tempted by each destitute one.
وَلَو حَسِبوا مالي طَريفي وَتالدي
وَقَرضي وَفَرضي لَم يَكُن نِصف دِرهَمِ
If they but knew my wealth was my wit and my offspring,
Along with what I owe and must pay, it would not be half a dirham!
