    فعالم الغيب محفوف بظلماء

    I have no way to meet her and recite to her

    The world of the unseen is shrouded in darkness

  4. لا على ذكريات حية أبدا

    من الطفولة لم يبرحن تلقائي

    Never to live memories

    From childhood, they have not stopped meeting me

  5. عشنا سويا أليفي نعمة وهوى

    نحسو الشذى بين أزهار وأضواء

    We lived together, intimate, in bliss and passion

    Inhaling fragrance amidst flowers and lights

  6. لم يبلغ الطير ما نلناه من مرح

    ومن طلاقة أحلام وأهواء

    No bird attained what we attained of joy

    And of the fluency of dreams and passions

  7. ولا ابتسام شواطي النيل ما بلغت

    عيننا من صفاء دون أقذاء

    Nor did the smile of Nile banks attain

    What our eyes attained of purity without mud

  8. ولا خرير السواقي في تعثرها

    تعثري ضاحكا في الطين والماء

    Nor the gurgling of waterways in their stumbling

    My laughing stumble in the mud and water

  9. ولا اختصام الورى والحرب صاخبة

    مثل اختصام لنا من غير شحناء

    Nor the clamor of people and roaring war

    Like our quarrel without rancor

  10. ولا الأماني للدنيا بأجمعها

    ساوت أمانينا أو بعض إحصائي

    Nor all the hopes for life

    Equaled our hopes or some of my counting

  11. تلك السنون التي مرت على عجل

    ذخيرة لم تفت لحظي وإصغائي

    Those years that passed hastily

    Are provisions that did not miss my instant and listening

  12. أحسها وأناجيها وأعرفها

    كأنما هي من ذاتي وأعضائي

    I feel them and speak to them and know them

    As if they are part of me and my limbs

  13. يا خادم المسرح العالي يسيرته

    هذي رواياتك العصماء للرائي

    O servant of the lofty theater, your career

    These are your infallible tales for the beholder

  14. قد خلدت في المرائي فهي نابضة

    بين الورى والمرائي مثل أحياء

    You immortalized them in visions so they pulse

    Between people and visions like the living

  15. من عاصروك استقلواف ي مشاعرهم

    عن عرضها فهي لن تنسى لنساء

    Those who were your contemporaries, independent in their feelings

    About presenting them, for women will not forget them

  16. ومن يجيئون حيث الضاد مكرمة

    سيكرمونك إكرام الألباء

    And those who come where Dhad is honored

    Will honor you with the honor of forefathers

  17. فنّ كفنّك لن يفنى وإن بعدت

    به السنون كبعد للأحباء

    So your art will not perish even if

    The years distance it like the distancing of loved ones

  18. لم ندر أيهما أولى بتكرمة

    تأليفك الحر في نقد وإيصاء

    We did not know which was worthier of honor

    Your free composition in critique and intimation

  19. أم عبقرية تمثيل خصصت به

    حتى تعدد في ألوان إيحاء

    Or the genius of your acting you specialized in

    Until it varied in the colors of suggestion

  20. يا مصلحا كل ما أهدى لنا مثل

    للمصلحين ودستور الأطباء

    O reformer, everything you guided us to resembles

    Reformers and the constitution of physicians

  21. تخذت بعد أبيك الشهم سيرته

    شعارك الحي في تنوير دهماء

    You took after your noble father in his conduct

    Your living motto in enlightening the ignorant

  22. وفي التسامي بمن هانوا ومن قبعوا

    في اللهو حتى غدوا أدنى الأذلاء

    And in rising above those who were disgraced and mired

    In frivolity until they became the lowliest of serviles

  23. إنا افتقدناك في وقت أحق به

    من كان مثلك يحمي كل علياء

    We have missed you in a time most deserving

    Of one like you to protect all honorable ones

  24. من كان دون شبيه في مناقبه

    حلو الفكاهة حتى للألداء

    One who was peerless in his virtues

    Sweetly humorous even to foes

  25. ويمزج الجد طي المزح تحسبه

    يلهو وفيه أفانين لإغراء

    And mixes seriousness into jest, you'd think him

    Joking while in him there were nets to lure

  26. نم في ضريحك نوم الأنس في سرر

    من الضياء وفي ألوان أشذاء

    Sleep in your tomb the sleep of intimacy on beds

    Of light and in the colors of flowers

  27. واقبل دموعي رثائي فهو من مهج

    شتى وإن كن أزهاري وأندائي

    And accept my tears, my elegy, for they are from hearts

    Diverse, though they are my flowers and songs
