قال الصديق وديع في سوانحه

تقسو الحياة على الأخيار أرزاء

My friend Wadee' said in his memoirs

That life is harsh on the virtuous people

وراح يذكر من آثاره مثل

للمحسنين أسر الدهر أم ساء

And he went on to give examples

Of the ingratitude of time towards benefactors

من رنق الأدب العالي بنفحته

وحظه من عقوق الدهر ما شاء

Of the one with refined and lofty literature

Whose fate from the ingratitude of time is as it desires

لم يكفه الخطب في زوج وفي ولد

حتى أراه جحود الناس أنواء

Not only did he have troubles with wife and child

Until he saw people's outright ingratitude

فيم التفجع والدنيا فواجعها

لا تنتهي وتعيد الأمس أصداء

Why the anguish when life's calamities

Are unending and yesterday's echoes repeat

خل احتمالك ثأرا من نكايتها

واسخر بها حينما تشقي الألباء

Let your endurance be revenge for its tyranny

And mock it when it makes the noblest suffer

جئنا إلى الكون في الذرات من قدم

ولم نفارقه أطيافا واضواء

We came to the universe as atoms from the beginning

And we'll never leave it as ghosts or lights

وليس يعرف منا كنهه أحد

وإن تغلغل في ماضيه مشاء

And no one knows our essence

Even if one probes its past

وإن عرفنا عرفنا بعض أخيلة

كأنما البحر ما نلقاه أنداء

And if we know we only know some imaginations

As if the sea is but the echoes we hear

ليست نقاط حروف لا نكيفها

قصيدة راودتنا اليوم عصماء

They are not just letters' dots we cannot comprehend

A poem that visited us today virtuously

ولا المآسي التي غاضت مدامعنا

من نارها ستزيد الكون أشلاء

Nor are the tragedies that made our tears flow

From its fire, the universe will have more wreckage

ساوى النشوء دمارا في مسارحه

كما عرفت وساوى البؤس نعماء

It equalized genesis and destruction in its theaters

As you know, and equalized misery and bliss

وما شكوت التياعا بل مسايرة

للفن أجتاز أمواتا وأحياء

And I never complained about my condition but went along

To pass through the living and dead for art's sake

فسر معي يا أديبا عيشه حرق

في مهمه العمر مغمورين أهواء

Explain it to me, oh literary man, the burning life

Of the obscure consumed by life's passions

نحيا لهيبا كأنا شبه ألهة

ونغتدي بانتهاء النار إيحاء

We live like fiery gods

And are satiated when the fire is extinguished
