1. اضحكي يا شمسُ وابكى يا سماء

    إنَّ هذا العيدَ عيدُ الشَّهداء

    Laugh O sun and weep O sky

    For this is the feast of martyrs

  2. لا أبالي أيَّ قُطرٍ حازهُم

    إنّهم ملءُ أناشيدِ الرجاء

    I care not which land embraced them

    For they are the essence of hope

  3. لا أُبالي أيَّ تاريخٍ حوى

    ذِكرهُم فالَّذكرُ عنوانُ البقاء

    I care not which era passed

    For their memory is the title of eternity

  4. لم تميزهمُ سوى أعمالِهم

    أو يعِّرفهم سوى لون الفدَاء

    Only their deeds distinguished them

    Or the color of sacrifice introduced them

  5. ربَّ منهم مَن تردَّى بالأسى

    كم ذبيحٍ لم يُضرَّج بالدماء

    How many of them fell in sorrow

    Like victims not drenched in blood

  6. كم شجاع عاينَ الموت وقد

    هابهَ الموتُ وشُّر الأشقياء

    How many brave saw death and death

    Feared him, evil of evils

  7. ليس من يحملُ قلباً كفُّه

    مثلَ من يحملُ ذُلَّ الجبناء

    None who carries a heart whose palm

    Is like who carries the disgrace of cowardice

  8. وفتاة في رُبَى شيلى حَمت

    بطلاً بل بطلينِ من فناء

    And a girl in her prime carried

    A hero, nay, two from death

  9. لجآ واستعصما في قبوها

    كدنانِ الخمرِ تزكو في الخفاء

    They took refuge and were protected in her abode

    Like jugs of wine mature in secrecy

  10. والدٌ حُّر وطفلٌ رَضعا

    في اختلافِ السنِّ تقدَيس الإباء

    A free father and suckling child

    In the difference of age, sanctity of fatherhood

  11. كافحا في طردهم أسبانيا

    حينَ سادَ الليلُ واغتيلَ الضياء

    They struggled to expel Spain

    When night prevailed and light was assassinated

  12. حين صار العيشُ والموتُ معاً

    عَدَماً لليائسين الضعفاء

    When living and dying together

    Became meaningless to the weak despairing ones

  13. فأتى الجندُ لبحثٍ عنهما

    وهما في القبو رهنٌ للقضاء

    So the soldiers came searching for them

    While they in the abode were hostages of fate

  14. لحظةٌ إن شاءَ ماتا إثرَها

    أو أبىَ مَرَّت مُجوناً أو هُراء

    A moment, if it willed they would die following it

    Or if it refused, it would pass unharmed or void

  15. قالت الحسناءُ هذا منزلي

    لا ألبىّ فيه حُكمَ الغربَاء

    The beautiful one said this is my home

    I do not refuse the rule of strangers in it

  16. أي زادْ شئتمو حُّل لكم

    إن يكن عندي وليس الاعتداء

    Whatever provision you want, help yourself

    If I have it and not transgression

  17. ما مفاتيحي سوى رمزي فما

    أرتضى ذُلاًّ لمن بالسيف جاء

    My keys are but symbols so I do not

    Accept humiliation for those who came with the sword

  18. ان يكن معناى هذا ضائعاً

    بينكم فهو بنفسي والوفاء

    If my meaning is lost

    Among you, it is with me and in loyalty

  19. قُبِّحتَ أعمالكم من ظَنِّكم

    أنَّ عُذر الحرب عذر اللؤماء

    Your actions are ugly in your thinking

    That the excuse of war is the excuse of villains

  20. تستبيحون بيوتاً لم تكن

    غير أقداس عفافِ ونقاء

    You ransack homes that were

    Nothing but sanctuaries of chastity and purity

  21. وتدوسون رضىَ اصحابها

    هل هُموُ رجسٌ وأنتم أتقياء

    And you trample over the consent of their people

    Are they filth while you are the pious?

  22. فاستشاط الضابطُ العاتي وأرغى

    حانقاً كالذئبِ دوَّى بالعواء

    The vicious officer became enraged and howled

    Furiously like a wolf, echoing with howls

  23. استعُّدوا فاستعُّدوا زُمرةَ

    عُوِّدت لذةَ قتل الأبرياء

    Prepare yourselves, prepare yourselves, group

    Who enjoy the pleasure of killing the innocent

  24. صوبوا النار إليها في رضىَ

    يرقبونَ الأمرَ كالرَّاجي العطاء

    Aim the fire at her in consent

    They watch the matter like one hoping for reward

  25. والفتاةُ الحرةُ الهيفاءُ تأبى

    أىَّ عفوٍ أو خضوعِ أو رياء

    And the free, proud girl refuses

    Any pardon, or submission, or hypocrisy

  26. نظرت نظرةَ جبارٍ عنيدٍ

    تطعنُ البغىَ بسهمِ الكبرياء

    She looked with the gaze of an obstinate tyrant

    Stabbing tyranny with an arrow of pride

  27. فإذا بالضابطِ المغرورِ يبدو

    عاجزاً عن أن يُثنِّى بالنِّداء

    And suddenly the arrogant officer seemed

    Helpless to call out

  28. وأخيراً بعد لأىٍ قال بل

    سوف تغدونَ أمامي كالشِّواء

    And finally after harassment, he said, no

    You will become before me like stubble

  29. سأحيلُ البيتَ ناراً ملؤها

    ضحكاتٌ من روؤسِ الأغبياء

    I will turn the house into fire filled with

    Laughs from the heads of fools

  30. لا تظنىّ والألى تحمينهم

    أنكم إلاّ هباءً في هَباء

    Burning the body is easy

    When the soul is saved from this affliction

  31. سأريكم في حجيمٍ حولكم

    غاية الغدرِ وعقبى السفهاء

    So that cruel one collapsed like one

    Stricken with blindness, though shame eluded him

  32. فأبت إلاّ شموخا زاده

    ثورةً واستضحكت مما أفاء

    And the soldiers neither extended a hand

    Towards her, nor uttered an offensive word

  33. وأشارت نحو جمرٍ لاعبٍ

    باللَّظى في الموقدِ الجمّ الذَكاء

    Rather they went like the mute whose

    Purpose is unknown, or recoiled like the foolish

  34. ثم قالت لك هذا كلُّهُ

    فاغتنمه محرِقاً أنَّى تشاء

    The war continued long and ended

    Like the fading of meteors in the open desert

  35. إنّ حرقَ الجسمِ أمرٌ هينٌ

    حين تنجو الروحُ من هذا البلاء

    People did not know why it erupted

    And persisted in tears and blood

  36. فتهاوى ذلك القاسي كمن

    ناله العُّى وإن فات الحياء

    And why suddenly it ended

    And became equal in beginning and end

  37. ومضى والجندُ ما مدوا يداً

    نحوها أو لفظوا لفظا أساء

    People persist in their misguidance

    And the most misguided were the leaders

  38. بل مضوا كالخرسٍ لم يُعرف لهم

    غرضٌ أو نكصوا كالبلهاء

    They never opposed for a reason

    In which the judgment of the wise succeeded

  39. دامت الحربُ طويلا وانتهت

    كانتهاءِ الشهُّبِ في القفر العراء

    The people's rights whatever you deny

    Are not erased when the people will

  40. ما درى الناسُ لماذا نشبت

    واستمرت في دموعٍ ودماء

    That child grew among his nation

    A leader ripened by the long affliction

  41. ولماذا فجأةً قد انتهت

    فتساوت في ابتداءٍ وانتهاء

    Events in his life passed

    Like the gusting of wind at the highest clouds

  42. أيدومُ الناس في ضلاّتهم

    وأَضُّل الناسِ كان الزعماء

    It did not destroy him, but rather his mind

    Grew in wisdom, composure and purpose

  43. ما تعادَوا مرةً عن سببٍ

    لم يوفَّق فيه حُكمُ الحكماء

    He became a pole his nation is guided

    By his guidance and friend of scholars

  44. ما حقوقُ الشعبِ مهما أنكرَت

    بالتي تُمحى إذا ما الشعب شاء

    And he built its identity from his spirit

    Before a firm foundation or electricity

  45. شَّب ذاك الطفلُ في أمتَّه

    قائداً أنضجهُ طولُ البلاءَ

    His brilliance shone in its history

    In the charter of a university in which he illuminated

  46. مرَّت الأحداثُ في سيرته

    مِثلَ عصفِ الريحِ في أعلى الجوَاء

    His faith in the messages of the trusted guides founded it

    Thus the heroes, their memory lives

  47. لم تُهَّدمهُ ولكن أشبعت

    عَقلهُ فهماً وحزماً ومضاء

    In the path of truth like the prophets

  48. صار قُطباً تهتدى أمَّتهٌ

    بهدَاه وصديقَ العلماء

  49. وَبَنىَ تحديدَها من روحه

    قبل صُلبٍ راسخٍ أو كهرباء

  50. شَّع في تاريخها اشعاعَهُ

    في نُهىَ جامعةٍ فيها أضاء

  51. كان من أَسَّسها إيمانُهُ

    برسالاتِ الهدَاةِ الأمُناء

  52. هكذا الأبطال يحيا ذكرٌ هم

    في سبيل الحقِّ مثلَ الأنبياء
