    And nurture it with my faithful belief

  4. وأدعو للأخوةِ لا أداجي

    ولو ضَحَّيتُ بالحظِّ الطعين

    And call for brotherhood, not flattering

    Even if I sacrifice the bitter luck

  5. وآبى أن أرى شراً لشرّ

    جَزاءً إن أَناخ على المئينِ

    And refuse to repay evil with evil

    As punishment, even if it lingers for hundreds of years

  6. فليس الحكمُ في الأفراد حكماً

    يصُّح على الشُّعوب وفي البنين

    For judging individuals is not

    A judgment that applies to nations and descendants

  7. وكم من قائلٍ إنىّ بحلمٍ

    أجازفُ بالتراثِ وبالسنين

    And how many say that I

    Gamble with heritage and years in my dreaming

  8. لعلى حالمٌ لكنَّ قلبي

    يرّتلُ للتسامحِ خيرَ دين

    Perhaps I am a dreamer, but my heart

    Chants for tolerance, the best religion

  9. ثَنائي للإمامِ كرتشقفسكي

    يُبارى فيه إعجابي حنيني

  10. الى العلم المَّبرز في نهاه

    ورافعِ رايةِ الأدب الثمين

    To the prominent science in its climax

    And raising the flag of precious literature

  11. يُرَبِّى الرائدين ولم يزالوا

    حماة الفنِ والفكرِ الرصين

    He nurtures pioneers, and they still are

    Protectors of sincere art and thought

  12. اليه تطلعُ الاقوام شتى

    كأن الفخرَ من حظَ المدين

    To him the diverse nations aspire

    As if pride is the fate of the city

  13. كأن الضاد لما غزالته

    حمته مع الصبي الحلو المصون

    As if literature since his prime

    Has been protected with the sweet innocent boy

  14. فليس يشيخُ مهما طالَ عمراً

    وليس بزاهدٍ أو مستهين

    He does not age no matter how long he lives

    And is not an ascetic or complacent

  15. وما نقداته إلا مهوراً

    تزَف إلى عزيزات الفنون

    And his critiques are but gifts

    Presented to the precious arts

  16. تربعَ حاكماً نظما ونثرا

    وعف عن السياسة والطنين

    He presided over poetry and prose

    And excused himself from politics and clamor

  17. فقد صارت مجامرَ محرِقاتٍ

    ودرباً للسجون وللمجون

    For it has become fiery gambling

    And a path to prisons and abomination

  18. وعاني الحُّر منها ما يعاني

    رقيبُ السجن في دارِ الجنون

    The free suffered from it what he suffers

    The prison guard in the madhouse

  19. ولم يبرح يبشِّرُ في ابتسام

    لدنيا الناسِ بالفجرِ الجنين

    And he never stopped preaching with a smile

    To the people's world the promising dawn

  20. وقد حفَّ الظلام بهم وحيناً

    تلظى بالمخاوفِ والظنون

    Though darkness engulfed them, and at times

    It blazed with fears and suspicions

  21. وها أنا مؤمنٌ أزجى دعائي

    إليه وللأنام ولليقين

    And here I am, a believer, sending my prayers

    To him and people and certainty
