اقطعوها وانبذوا من قد دَعاها

نعمةً إنّا شبعنا من أَذاهَا

Cut it down and cast away one who invited it

Indeed, we are satisfied with its harm

قد خُدعنا في الذي قالوا لنا

عنَ جناها بئسَ ما يَجنيِ جَناها

We were deceived in what they told us

About its paradise, evil is what its paradise yields

أثرٌ أحيا قروناً سلفت

وأماتَ العصر في بغىٍ تناهي

A legacy that revived generations past

Yet killed the era in endless tyranny

قلت أحيا ليته الحلم الذي

كان أحيا الأمس إصلاحاً وجاهَا

I said, if only it revived the wisdom

That yesterday enlivened reform and guided it

إنّما أحيا شروراً سلفت

زوّقوها كي يعُّدوه إلهاً

Rather, it revived evils of the past

They adorned it that they may worship it as a god

خدعونا حقبةَ واستسهلوا

أن يُضُّلوا الشعبَ في الذلِ فتاها

They deceived us for an epoch and trivialized

Misguiding the people into humiliation and error

كم تَغنيَّناً بحبٍ صادق

فرأينا من هوى فيمن تباهَى

How much did we sing with sincere love

Only to see, from those who boasted, folly

وأضَعنا جمَّ نأميلٍ لنا

كان نُبلاً فغدا منا سفاهَا

And we wasted much pure inclination

That was once noble, yet turned to ignorance

سلطةُ الشعبش هي الأم التي

أنمت الأحرارَ لا دَعوى سواهَا

The people's authority is the mother

That nurtured the free, none else but it
