The island of light greets us
And spreads its expanse within us
Its lights delight our poems
And its colors narrate our songs
Silence does not blame it, for in its silence
There is what inspires our chanting
When I contemplated it, I asked it
About its love, like my infatuation
From the youngest who owned what it has
And the oldest who prayed to us
So it smiled then swayed as
A meadow sways our winds
And scented me as it scents
The dreams of lovers with light
A religion for its people, yet they knew
No god before as their religion
Without Him, despite their treasures
They would be barefoot and miserable
A smile fills their homes
So you see no weeping weepers
And if they complained of something
The complainers would not complain
The breaths of this light, when they blew
Turned the suffering into playful ones
So they chirped in it, as if
They had become nightingales
Do not prevent me from any gathering I see
Temptation in, greeting us
For I am the poet whose art
Creates for light scales
And bestows blessings in different ways
On people experiencing hardship
The trees swayed for me in elation
And the water and birds sang
As if I increased their joy
And inhabited them with my poems
The towering branches flirted with me
With tongues narrating the light
Some of them a paradise from behind
And some tempting us with fire
So my sense of them was that they
Veiled a paradise of our pleasures
And that they, like me in their wisdom
Were playful worshippers
And that the world with its signs
And its best made by our hands
