1. في الشتاءِ العويلُ والأشجانُ

    للألى هان حظهم منذ هانوا

    In winter there is wailing and lament

    For the weak, their share of life is lament

  2. بل فصولُ الحياةِ موتٌ معادٌ

    تتساوى فكلُّها حِرمانُ

    Rather, the seasons of life are recurring death

    They are all alike, total deprivation

  3. رُوِّيت من دموعهم زهراتٌ

    ثم ماتت وضِّرج البستان

    I was watered from their tears, flowers

    Then they died and the gardens were bloodied

  4. والعطورُ التي حباها ربيعٌ

    أنكرتها الحياةُ والأكفان

    The scents endowed by spring

    Life and shrouds denied them

  5. بدِّدت في المحيطِ لغو أوضاعت

    وأباهَا زمانها والمكان

    Scattered in the ocean, their situations dissolved

    And their time and place rejected them

  6. كل ما حولهم وإن لجَّ بالمع

    نىَ هراءٌ وكله بُهتان

    All that glittered around them, even if adorned

    Was delusion and all lies

  7. لا مقاييسَ غيرُ ما يفرضُ الذل

    وما يستبيحه الطغيانُ

    No standards but what humiliation imposes

    And what tyranny legalizes

  8. عقهم كل ما رأوهُ ملاذاً

    وانتهى في عقوقه الانسانُ

    Their minds denied them any refuge

    And man's disobedience came to an end

  9. عَجبوا من وجودهم ومناهُم

    بينما البؤسُ حَولهم طُوفانُ

    They were astonished by their existence and achievements

    While misery surrounded them like a flood

  10. خَجلت في النَّدى طيورٌ تغنَّت

    فتغنت بحزنها الغدران

    The birds in the dew were ashamed to sing

    So the thrushes sang sadly

  11. لم يُميَّز ربيعهم من شتاءٍ

    في قلوبٍ إجدابُها ألوان

    Their spring was not distinguished from winter

    In hearts whose facets were colors

  12. لم يخافوا موتاً وقد وَهَموا المو

    تَ حياةً لمثلهم قد تُصانُ

    They did not fear death and imagined death

    To be a life that could be protected

  13. وتناسوا لهم مقالاً وأذها

    ناً بعهد تُعاقَبُ الأذهانُ

    And they forgot the sayings and warnings

    That admonish minds

  14. واستراحوا إلى التدهور واليأ

    سِ كأنَّ الرجاءَ لصُّ يدَانُ

    And they rested assured in deterioration and misery

    As if hope were a thief

  15. وأتى الفارسُ البشيرُ فلم يَح

    فل بأنبائِهِ فتىً أو مكانَ

    And the herald knight came but did not care

    To inform any youth or place

  16. غَير فردٍ منهم هو الشاعرُ الثا

    ئرُ في سجنه هو الفَّنان

    Except one man among them, the poet in jail

    He is the artist

  17. هو من يعرف انطواءَ على النف

    سِ إذا شاع في الهواء الدُّخانُ

    He who knows how to withdraw into himself

    When smoke spreads in the air

  18. وهو من يعرف الزئيرَ من القب

    رِ إذا هَدَّمَ القبورَ الجبانُ

    And he who knows the roar from the grave

    When the coward demolishes graves

  19. وهو في سجنه الأبُّى على السج

    نِ فمنه السَّجينُ والسجان

    And he, in his remote prison, disdains prison

    So both prisoner and jailer are from him

  20. وهو منهم في البؤسِ إن لم يكن من

    هم اذا ما استعبدَ النُّهىَ الإذعانُ

    And he is one of them in misery, even if not one of them

    When prohibition is enslaved by coercion

  21. قيل أبشر سيحضر المهراجا

    عن قريبٍ ويضحك المهرَجَان

    It was said, rejoice, the festival will arrive soon

    And the carnival will laugh

  22. إنَّ تشريفهَ لنعمىَ عزيزٌ

    أن تَرَاهَا وُكلُّها إحسانُ

    That honoring you is precious

    That you see it, and it is all favor

  23. وأَعدَّ الحَّكامُ للسيدِ القا

    دم ما يفرضُ الرياءُ المزَان

    And the rulers prepared for the visiting noble

    What ostentation imposes

  24. من ضروبِ اللهَّوِ الغريبِ ولو أنَّ

    الُمجِّلى من بينهم بهلوانث

    Of strange frivolities, even if among them a clown

    All their skill is hypocrisy and pretense

  25. كلُّ إتقانهم نفاقٌ وبتهانق

    ومنهم ليخجل البهتان

    And one of them would shame deception

    They did not care how much the people wallowed in humiliation

  26. لم يبالوا كم مُرِّغَ الشعبُ في الضي

    مِ اذا داسَ رأَسه السلطان

    When trampled by the sultan

    They prepared wine and revelry and various sins

  27. هيأوا الخمرَ والقيانَ وَشَتَّى

    من مخازٍ وُخوِدعَ الإيوان

    And the parliament was tricked

    Inanimate things secretly shudder from the man

  28. يشمئُّز الجمادُ سراً من الرج

    س إذا سَرَّ غيرهَ الإعلان

    When what makes another happy is announced

    When people did not care for adornments

  29. حينما الناسُ لم يبالوا من الزينات

    شيئاً كأنهم عُميان

    As if they were blind

    There was the frustrated poet among them

  30. فإذا الشاعرُ المرَّجبُ فيهم

    يتلظى كأنه البركان

    Burning as if he were a volcano

    He said: O people, why this despair in glory

  31. قال ياقوم ما القنوطِ بمجدٍ

    للعزيزِ النهُّىَ ولا النسيانُ

    For the noble one, and no forgetting!

    Slap the despotic narcissist, and decide

  32. اصفعوا الغاشمَ الأنَاني واقضوا

    في دَعَاوى يُقيمها الشيطانُ

    On claims made by Satan

    And the ornate procession came, the noble

  33. وأتى الموكب المفَّخمُ والرَّاجا

    فخورٌ كأنه الديانُ

    Proud, as if he were the judge

    The swelling of tummies, chests and bellies

  34. وانتفاخُ الأوداجِ والصدر والبط

    نِ جبالق خلالها القيعانُ

    Mountains with chasms among them

    The jangling of trinkets covered dwarfs

  35. وائتلاقُ الحلِّى غَطَّينَ قَزماً

    شررق للنفوسِ لا طَيلسانث

    More evil to souls than scorpions

    And there were people with lanterns

  36. وإذا الناسُ بالمصابيح مُوفُو

    نَ كأنَّ النهارَ لا يُستبان

    As if daylight could not be seen

    And there was the poet brought forward, mocking

  37. وإذا الشاعر المقَّدمُ حُكمٌ

    ساخرٌ فوق ما عَناهُ العِيانث

    Above what the eyes perceived

    He said: That tyrant, who are you? What do

  38. قال ذاك الطاغوتُ من أنتض ما مع

    نى مصابيحكم أهذا جَنانُ

    Your lanterns mean, is this paradise?

    Or have you gone mad? Where is the splendor among you

  39. أم جُننتم أينَ الحفاوهُ منكم

    أيلاقى التَّفضُّل النُّكرانُ

    Does such ingratitude meet favor?

    The artist replied: I am the poet among them

  40. فأجابَ الفنانُ إنيّ أنا الشا

    عرُ فيهم وإنني التَّرجمان

    And I am the translator

    However difficult the tribulations,

  41. كيفما كانت الخطوب الدَّواهي

    أنا قلبٌ ومسمعٌ ولسان

    I am a heart, hearing and tongue

    They are dummies, from them I derive

  42. هم دَمىِ من بهم أعُّز ومنهم

    يُستُّمد الإلهام والإيمان

    Honor, inspiration and faith

    If that despair has seized them

  43. إن يكن ذلك القنوط احتواهم

    فهو بي حُرقةٌ وبي نيرانُ

    Then it burns and consumes me

    And it is what transformed dirges into

  44. وهو من بَدَّل البكامَة إفصا

    حاً فعافت قيودَها الأوزان

    Joyful songs, so their meters reconciled

    We did not come, O conspirator, to you

  45. لم نجئ أيها المؤمَّرُ فينا

    كالضحايا تنالها الأوثانُ

    Like sacrifices offered to idols

    Rather, these lanterns have served

  46. إنما هذه المصابيحُ أدَّت

    غايةَ السُّخرِ إن يُغلَّ اللسانُ

    The purpose of satire, if the tongue is bound

    For one who does not see his subjects in misery

  47. للذى لا يرى رعاياه في البؤ

    سِ فماتوا به مِراراً وعانوا

    So they died bitterly through him and suffered

    Then the place roared with the noble's anger

  48. ثم دوَّى المكانُ من غضبهِ الرَّاجا

    وكادت تُهدَّمُ الاركان

    And the pillars almost collapsed

    And the loyal poet met his fate

  49. وقضى الشاعرُ الوفُّى غريباً

    يصحب النفىَ ما له شُطآنُ

    Exile accompanies whoever has resolve

    Then generations passed, and passed

  50. ثُمَّ وَلِّى جيلٌ وجيلٌ فسادت

    ثورةُ الشعبِ وانقضى الصولجانُ

    Until the people's revolution triumphed, and the scepter fell
