طالعْ القوم بالدعاء المجابِ

واتل فيما تلوتَ فصلَ الخطابِ

The people set out with answered prayers

And recite in what you have recited the chapter of the address

وتداركْ طرائقاً لك سارت

منهمُ في مفارقٍ وشعاب

And make up for ways that went well for you

Among them in separates and valleys

وتعهَّدْ مواثقاً من محبِّي

ن تلقيتها ومنْ أحباب

And commit to pacts from those who love you

Whether you have met them or friends

واحتملْ في البلاد أعباءها عن

زعماءِ البلادِ والأحزاب

And endure in the countries their burdens for

The leaders of the countries and parties

وارم دعوى الغريم بالحجة البي

ضاءِ تمضي كصارم أو شهاب

And refute the claim of the enemy with the clear proof

Proceeding like a sharp sword or a flame

عدتَ بالصحة التي هي كنزٌ

زاد وامتد في علاج الصعاب

You have returned with the health that is a treasure

Provisions have been extended in treating difficulties

وتبينتَ كلَّ جارٍ وآتٍ

بعد تلك النوى وذاك الغياب

And you have realized every neighbor and visitor

After those intentions and that absence

موسمٌ قام للقضية أم مؤ

تمرٌ للأعزة الأنجاب

A season that stood up for the case or a

Conference for the dear young ones

يتلاقون في الجزيرة أعوا

ناً على السبْل منك والأسبابِ

They meet in the island

Helpers for you and for reasons

وسع الملكَ كلَّه قصرُها وهْ

و مكانُ العقولِ والألبابِ

The whole kingdom—her palace encompasses it

And it is the place of minds and intellects

ساحة الحشد بشرت بثواب

مصر فيها وأُنذرت بعقاب

The field of assembly gave good tidings of

Egypt’s rewards in it and warned of punishment

قمتَ فيها لمصرَ تجمع صَحْباً

لكَ بيضَ الوجوه خضرَ الثياب

You stood up in it for Egypt, gathering companions

For you of white faces and green clothes

أقبلوا في العتاد من حكمة الشي

ب كراماً وعنفوانِ الشبابِ

They came in raiment from the wisdom of old

Generously and the vigor of youth

وهمُ القادةُ الذين مضوا بال

شعب سمح المدى مجيد الطلاب

And they are the leaders who went with the

Lenient people, splendid youth

وأبوا أن يقيمهم قاهرٌ من

ه مقام الترغيبِ والإرهاب

And refused that an oppressor among

Them stops them with enticement and intimidation

صابَروه دهراً وهم من عناد ال

دهر أولى بثورةٍ واضطراب

They endured him for an age and they, from the stubbornness of

Fate, are more deserving of revolt and turmoil

وانتهى المستَقرُّ بين وعيد ال

متحدي وموعد الخلابِ

And the settlement ended between the threat of

The defiant one and the appointment of defeats

ومن الخير أن أرى من أباة ال

ضيم بعد الرضى مراس الغضابِ

And it is good that I see from the wronged’s

Refusal, after consent, the tilting of rage

إنما الرأيُ للسراة جميعاً

لا لشتّى الأخلاط والأوشاب

Verily the opinion is for the elite entirely

Not for different riffraff and rabble

والمولُّون عنك بين نذير

منك قاسٍ وطيِّبٍ من عتاب

And the governors about you are between

A warner from you, stern, and a kind reproacher

وعدوُّ البلادِ أهونُ ممن

يَصطفيه من أهلها ويحابي

And the enemy of the countries is weaker than one

Who chooses him from its people and supports him

قسمةُ العبء بين اصحابه أع

دلُ من حمله على الأعقاب

The distribution of the burden between its people is more

Equitable than carrying it on the heels

لا يضيعُ الرجالُ حقاً كحق

وكلوه لآجِلِ الأحقاب

The men do not waste any right like the right

They have taken for the sake of eras

أين حامي الدستور وهو طعينٌ

بين أيدي العدى وأيدي الصحاب

Where is the constitution’s defender while he is

Surrounded by the hands of enemies and friends

ومن المقتفي عقيدته قب

ل اختيار الشيوخِ والنوابِ

And whoever follows its doctrine before

The choice of elders and representatives

يكثرون الكلامَ فيه وهل يغ

ني كلامٌ عند القنا والحرابِ

They speak much about it yet does speech

Suffice at spears and wars?

منحة الغاصبين كان فأمسى

وهو للغاصبين في الأسلابِ

The gift of usurpers which was

Is now for the usurpers in the loots

من يردُّ المغيرَ عن دارِ قومٍ

تركوها مفتوحةَ الأبوابِ

Who will drive back the aggressor from a people’s

Home they left open-doored?

أخذ المدْنَ والثغور وطالت

يدُه اليومَ لامتلاك الرقاب

He has taken cities and outposts and his

Hand has longed today to possess necks

كيف تُعطى البلادُ من لم يهبها

روحه من طعامها والشرابِ

How can the countries be given to one whose

Spirit has not given it any of its food and drink?

والذي لا يفيده السلم لا ير

جو حياةً بغير ظفرٍ ونابِ

One who is not benefited by peace does not wish

Life without victory and looting

وقوى الجندِ في الممالك لن تغ

نيَ عن بعضها قوى الكتَّاب

And the power of soldiers in kingdoms will not

Suffice over some of them the power of writers

للشجاع احترامُهُ من عِداه

والهوانُ المذلُّ للهيَّاب

The brave have their respect from their enemy

And humiliation is for cowards

أخذتْ مصرُ تدخل اليومَ حرباً

لاغتصاب مشبوبةً وانتهاب

Egypt has begun entering a war today

For the rape of an abused and pillaged one

وهي أهْل لأن تباشرها أم

هِيَ أولى بحيدةٍ واجتناب

And it is worthy to undertake it as

Mothers are worthier of shyness and avoidance

ولغرمٍ تخوضها وخسارٍ

أم لغنمٍ تخوضها واكتساب

Is it for an enemy she enters it and loss

Or for gain she enters it and earning?

من عذيري ممن قضى وتولى

رغباتِ المسيطر الغلاب

Blameworthy am I from he who judged and assumed

The desires of the victorious vanquisher

شغلتنا فعالُهُ وهو ما زا

ل على صمته وراء الحجاب

His actions have preoccupied us and he still

Remains silent behind the veil

لا يبالي صوتَ النكير ولا يش

فق يوماً من شبهة المرتاب

He does not care about condemnation’s voice nor awakes

One day from the suspicion of doubters

وهو يرعى عذرَ المفرِّطِ والبا

غي وينسى عذرَ السليب المصاب

He observes the excuse of the delinquent and the deserter and forgets

The excuse of the miserable afflicted victim

يكتم السرَ عن أخلائه وال

سرُّ ملءُ البطاح ملءُ الهضاب

He hides the secret from his confidantes

Yet the secret is as public as the lowlands are as public as the hills

يا زعيم الأحرار وهو اسمك الشا

ملُ غرَّ الأسماءِ والألقاب

O leader of the free—and that is your inclusive name

Finer than names and titles

شيعة المصلحين ترعى وحزبُ ال

يمن والأمن والهدى والصواب

The party of reformers herd and the party of

Felicity, security, guidance and righteousness

أنت من مارس السياسةَ في عص

ف أعاصيرها وعُنفِ العُباب

You who practiced politics in the raging

Tempests and violence of floods

جَمْعُك الليلةَ القُوى لك فتحٌ

فوق مجد الأنساب والأحساب

Your gathering tonight of powers is for you a conquest

Above the glory of lineages and accounts

لا أطيلُ الكلامَ بعد الذي قل

تَ وقد جَلَّ ما بمصر وما بي

I do not prolong speech after what I have said

And the situation in Egypt and outside it is clear

ضقتُ بالحاضر الكريه ومن لي

بمريح في غيره من عذابي

I have been distressed by the hated present and I have no

Comfort in anything else from my agony

وتحملتُ من زماني صروفاً

في حسابي كانت وغير حسابي

And I have endured from my time twists

That were in my account and not in my account

وأتى ما ظننتُ أمس وما زل

تُ أخافُ الخفيَّ خلفَ السَّحاب

And what I feared yesterday has come and what I

Still fear secretly behind the clouds

أزمة اليوم شرُّ ما لقيتْهُ

دولةٌ من تحولٍ وانقلاب

Today’s crisis is the worst that a

State has met of change and overthrow

مستقلون نحن أم تبع أم

أمةٌ في وصايةٍ وانتداب

Are we independent or subjects or

A nation under guardianship and mandate?

مصر في كل دولة مدد لل

حلفاء الكرام لا للذئاب

Egypt in every state is a refuge for the

Dear allies, not for wolves

يا رجالَ البلاد حسبكم اليو

مَ رجوعُ الوفاقِ بعد الذهاب

O country’s men, enough for you today is

The return of concord after departure

جاهدوا الدهر باليقين وبالآ

مالِ والعزمِ والقلوب الصلاب

Struggle against fate with certainty, hopes

Resolve and steely hearts

وتلقُّوا عَرْضَ القليل عليكم

منه بالصد عنه والإضراب

And take the offering of little from it

By rejecting and boycotting it

عهد ندين ما تريدون لا عه

د اتصال العبيدِ بالأرباب

We owe no allegiance that you want; no

Allegiance of slaves to lords

إن في شملِكم ضمان المقادي

رِ لصدقِ العقبى وحسنِ المآبِ

In your unity lies the guarantee of destinies

For the honesty of future and good outcome
