أدركت بالحسنى هوى الجبارِ

واجتزت بالنجوى مكان النارِ

I have attained the desire of the Almighty through virtue

And crossed the place of fire through whispers

وظفرت بالحق الذي استخلصته

من قوة الأنياب والأظفار

And obtained the truth that I extracted

From the strength of fangs and claws

وأخذت للشعب الأمين مصيره

من قُلَّب الأدوار والأطوار

And took for the faithful people their fate

From the overturning of eras and cycles

وحفظت للوادي المقدس نيله

ومددته لصديقه والجار

And preserved for the sacred valley its Nile

And extended it to its friend and neighbor

يجري ولولا محكمات سدوده

وحدوده لطغى على الأقطار

It flows even without the firmness of its dams

And borders, it would have overwhelmed regions

ملآن لولا البحر وهو مصبه

أمددت منه سائر الأنهار

Full, were it not for the sea as its estuary

From which I extended the rest of the rivers

لك أن تصرَّفَه بمعيار إلى

أمد وتصرِفَهُ بلا معيار

You have the liberty to manage it by a measure for a period

And manage it without a measure

لم تبق في المجرى نزاعاً بعد ما

ملكت يداك مواقع الأمطار

No conflict remains in the canal after

Your hands have controlled the places of rain

ذهب الغريم إلى شروطك وانتهى

ما كان من عنت ومن إصرار

The adversary has gone to your conditions and ended

What there was of hardship and insistence

ورأت سفارتك الجليلة عنده

ما شئت من زلفى ومن إكبار

And your eminent embassy saw in him

What you wished of courtesy and veneration

وأتتك تحمل عن جناه وظله

حلو الحديث وطيبَ الأخبار

And it came to you bearing from his shade

Sweet talk and good news

لا يكتفي بالود ترعاه له

إلا وأنت له من الزوار

He is not satisfied with the affection you foster for him

Unless you are among his visitors

في صحبة الملك الكريم ممكناً

فيها لمصر علائق الأمصار

Possible in the company of the generous king

In it for Egypt the concerns of nations

ذكرتك جامعة الرفاق وجددت

فيها لعهدك أفضل الآثار

The circle of friends remembered you and renewed

In it for your covenant the best traces

ودعتك تكرم فيك مصر وتصطفي

قوماً رفعتهمُ على الأقمار

They called you to honor Egypt in you and choose

A people you raised above the planets

تهدي إليك الضخم من نسب ومن

لقب ومن صلة بها وشعار

They dedicate to you the eminent in lineage and

Title and kinship to it and its emblem

شرف الشهادة بعد ما استحققته

بعد اعتراف القوم والإقرار

The honor of testimony after you deserved it

After the people's admission and acknowledgement

أبقى العلائق والمرافق ما أتى

بتآلف الأخلاق والأفكار

I keep the relationships and companionship that came

With the harmony of morals and ideas

وأحب ميثاق إلى حُفَّاظه

ما جاءهم من طائع مختار

And the dearest covenant to its preservers

Is what came to them from a willing chosen one

والعلم ما دارت به الأيام لا

ما جاء في كتب وفي أسفار

And knowledge is what the days revolved around, not

What came in books and epics

وإذا امتلكت من القويِّ سريرة

فقد امتلكت أعنة الأقدار

And if you possess the intimacy of the strong

Then you have possessed the support of fates

ما بعته إلا المودة حرة

ولك الجزاء بها وربح الشاري

I only sold it out of free affection

And for you is the reward for it and the buyer's profit

حمل الغضاب على جميلك عنده

غضب المريب على القضاء الجاري

They carried resentment against your favor with him

Like the resentment of the wary upon fate

أرضاك فاتهموا ولو أرضاهمُ

وضعوه منهم موضع الأبرار

You pleased them yet they blamed you, and had you pleased them

They would have put you in the place of the righteous

واستنكروا ما لو أُنيلوا بعضه

طاروا بما نالوه كل مطار

And they disapproved what, had they obtained some of it

They would have flown with what they attained like every aviator

أيكلفونك أن تضر وإنهم

لا يحملون عواقب الضّرار

Do they charge you with harm while they

Do not carry the consequences of harm?

ويعرّضونك للذي أعياهم

في كل مضطرب وكل مثار

And they expose you to what exhausted them

In every turmoil and conflict

ثقل الحساب عليهمُ فترددوا

بين العتاب لديك والإعذار

The reckoning was heavy on them so they wavered

Between blaming you and apologizing

وتلمسوا الأنصار ممن ساءهم

لك أن تراه أصدق الأنصار

And they sought supporters from those who disliked you

For you to see him the most loyal supporter

يتطلبون الثأر منك وما رعوا

معروفك الجاري مكان الثار

They demand vengeance from you yet they did not

Regard your ongoing favor in place of vengeance

دع ما ادعوه فلن تعود سياسة

كانوا بها من أخسر التجار

Leave what they claim for they will not

Return to a policy they had as most failing traders

واحكم فما لوزارة العمال من

أمر ولا لوزارة الأحرار

And judge, for the ministry of agents has no

Order, nor the ministry of the free

طلع النهار بما يسر وليس في

ضوء النهار مكامن الأسرار

Dawn emerged with what it eased, and there are no

Secrets in the light of dawn

فَتْحُ السلامِ برأيك المتبوع لا

فتحُ الوغى بالجحفل الجرار

Opening peace with your followed opinion not

Opening tumult with the potent legions

إني مودِّعك المشوق إلى غد

ولتحمدن عواقب التيار

I bid you farewell with yearning until tomorrow

And you shall praise the consequences of the tide

ولترجعن إلى حماك موفقاً

بين المآرب فيه والأوطار

And you shall return to your protector successful

Among the purposes in it and cycles

وأنا المبشر بالقريب من المنى

والصدق كل الصدق في أشعاري

And I am the bearer of glad tidings soon of the wish

And truth, all truth, in my poems
