يا أديب الزمان تهنئة بال

سود تلقاه من عظيم الزمانِ

O scholar of the age, congratulations without gloom

You have attained it from the greatest of the age

أنت وفَّيتَهُ ولاءً ووفّا

ك جزاء والخير ما تصنعان

You were loyal to it with loyalty and faithfulness

Your rank and the good you both do are your reward

رتبة في مرتب نلت منه

ويد المجد في يد العرفان

You have attained a position in an eminent position

And the hand of glory is in the hand of knowledge

كلما نال نابهٌ منه عطفاً

شمل العطف سائر الإخوان

Whenever an elite attained kindness from it

That kindness encompassed all the brethren

لو ملكت الأمور لم أرع إلا

كل صافي الضمير حلو اللسان

If I controlled matters, I would not mind except

Every pure conscience, sweet of tongue

أنا من يعرف الغيوب ويغشى

كل واد وما تركت مكاني

I am one who knows the unseen and overlooks

Every valley and place I did not leave my position

إنما يعرف الجميل ذووه

ويجل البيان أهل البيان

Indeed, only its people recognize favor

And the eloquent revere the people of eloquence

يا أخي سرني رضاك وإن كن

ت من الحال ثائر الأشجان

My brother, your consent delighted me even if

I was indignant about the situation

وقد ارتحت بارتياحك من طو

ل همومي بمصر والسودان

And I felt relieved by your relief from prolong

ed worries in Egypt and Sudan

أنت بالمهرجان أجدر لولا ال

حرب بين الحبشان والطليان

You are more deserving of the festival unless the

war between the Abyssinians and Italians

والذي منه أمس حذرت آت

بسموم الحديد والنيران

And that which I warned against yesterday comes

With the poisons of iron and fire

تفزع الأرض والسماء غداً من

فتكات الإنسان بالإنسان

The earth and sky will tremble tomorrow from the

Fatalities of man against man

والردى للأبيِّ أفضل من عي

ش على الضيم واحتمال الهوان

And demise is better for the defiant than living

In oppression and enduring humiliation
