1. فؤادٌ ذكيٌّ شاعر ناثر حرُّ

    ولكنه بالعلم والفضل مغترُّ

    A clever, poetic soul, a writer free

    Yet arrogant with knowledge, grace's hubris be

  2. يتيه على الإخوان كبراً ولم يكن

    ليخفض من مقداره التيه والكبر

    Among brethren he would act so proud and mean

    Nor would his wandering and pride diminish or demean

  3. فكان له من مجده خير شافع

    لديهم ومن آياته لهم صبر

    Yet glory was his advocate, indeed

    And signs of patience brethren saw in his every deed

  4. إذا هجروه ساعة زاد ميلهم

    إليه فعادوا بالمعاذير واضطروا

    If shunned but for an hour, their love for him would thrive

    Returning with excuses, their bond revived

  5. ولو تركوه واغتنوا عن وداده

    لكان له عما تعوده زجر

    If left, independent of his friendship ties

    His cloying ways would earn him apt reprise

  6. تمادى يرى أن ليس في الأرض مثله

    وأن ليس إلا ذكره في الورى ذكر

    Believing no peer on earth compared to him

    None but his name earned any fame or whim

  7. فما كان إلا أن تناول عجبُه

    أباه فأمسى ساخراً منه يَزْوَرُّ

    Till his conceit made him deride his father in jest

    Mocking his ignorance, propriety he transgressed

  8. يعيره بالجهل حيناً ويعتدي

    عليه بما تأبى المروءة والبر

    Lording opinions, commanding, all control

    In their home, his word was law by vote and poll

  9. تحكَّم فيه مستبداً برأيه

    وصار له في بيته النهي والأمر

    Not satisfied, ambitious, hoping still

    For journeys to lift him higher up the hill

  10. ولم يقتنع حتى تطلع طامعاً

    إلى سَفَرٍ يرقى العلى بعده السُفْرُ

    "I've tried", said he "Egypt and all its folk

    Yet nothing here has pleased me in its scope"

  11. فقال أبي جربت مصر وأهلها

    فلم ترضني مصر وما وسعت مصر

    "To Paris now I yearn, perhaps to gain

    Comfort unfound here for all the age's pain"

  12. وعندي إلى باريس شوقٌ لعلني

    أرى راحة فيها بما أبدع العصر

    His father replied "Have I not, my son

    Given you enough, whence this urge to run?

  13. فقال أفي وسعي منالك بعد ما

    بدا لك من ديني فديني هو العذر

    If chasing glory, then provision yourself

    With money and goods to achieve your wealth"

  14. فإن كنت طمّاحاً إلى المجد فارتزق

    يعنك على آمالك المال والوفر

    "If you refuse funds, we shall separate

    And enmity between us cultivate"

  15. فقال إذا لم تعطني المال راضياً

    تفرق شمل الأهل واستحكم الشر

    His father sold some land, opposed at heart

    Grief choking him, blessings torn apart

  16. فبع من حُلِي أختي أو ارهَنْ فإنني

    مُصرٌّ على عزمي وإن ثقل الوزر

    "Go now", he said "with my curse upon your head"

    "Farewell", said he "crud old man" and fled

  17. فباع أبوه مكرهاً بعض ملكه

    وفي صدره غيظ يضيق به الصدر

    His father called "I hope you fail to find

    What lures you so, false hope makes blind"

  18. وقال بُنَيَّ ارحَلْ بسخطي مزوداً

    فقال وداعاً أيها الوالد الغر

    The boy walked on, his rival's town ahead

    Dawn had arrived, he rushed with harried tread

  19. فنادى أبوه لا ظفرت ببغية

    ونالك مما غرك الهون والضر

    A holiday prayer was held, he hurried in

    Nomad and settled folk to begin

  20. فسار الفتى ليلاً وعاج بقرية

    له مبغض فيها وقد طلع الفجر

    A preacher spewed myths, the boy showed his pique

    "Silence! This nonsense is blasphemy"

  21. وكانت صلاة العيد فاضطر مسرعاً

    إلى مسجد فيه الْتَقى البدو والحضر

    Mistaken for a judge, he was admired

    Forgetting his foe, he retired

  22. فلاقى خطيباً بالخرافات واعظاً

    فصاح به اسكت إن ما قلته كفر

    The people's preacher was his enemy in disguise

    Loth to ruin his chance, the favor he denies

  23. وقد حسبوه حاكماً فاحْتَفَوا به

    وما راعه من خصمه النظر الشزر

    "People!", he cried "will you not contest

    My Uncle's lies? The truth manifests!"

  24. وكان خطيب القوم عمَّ عدوِّه

    فعز عليه أن يضيع له قدر

    "If you will hear our arguments unfold

    No boon I ask if I him best and scold"

  25. فناداهم يا قوم هلا امتحنتم

    مكذب عمي فانجلى لكم السر

    With filthy clay his rival appeared

    "Respond if you desire, acclaim guaranteed"

  26. عليّ إذا طاوعتموني جداله

    وما لي عليكم إن ظفرت به أجر

    "Matter or illusion? Which might you see?"

    "No doubt, substance it is, plain as can be"

  27. فجاء من الطين الكريه بقطعة

    وقال أجبني إن تشأ ولك الشكر

    "Marvel, folk, at your guest so wise

    Whence judgment falters and sight lies"

  28. ترى عرضاً أم جوهراً فأجابه

    أرى جوهراً لا شك فيه ولا نكر

    Pelted with stones, a raging throng closed in

    As warriors descend on war's great din

  29. فقال اعجبوا يا قوم من حكم ضيفكم

    ففي مثل هذا الحكم يضطرب الفكر

    Injured in leg and face, his pride a bitter sting

    Robbed of clothes and money, shame wringing

  30. فهاجوا عليه بالحصا يرجمونه

    كما هاج في ميدانه الجحفل المَجْر

    To kin he stumbled, poverty's resigned helot

    By critics tamed, he lived as hoped, auspicious the lot

  31. فلم ينصرف إلا مهاناً محقراً

    وفي وجهه جرح وفي رجله كسر

  32. وقد سلبوه ماله وثيابه

    فعاد إلى أهليه يخجله الفقر

  33. وكان له من ذلك الخطب رادعٌ

    فعاش كما يرجو وسالمه الدهر
