أعد يا خطيبُ الدعوة الحرة التي

أراحت عقولاً حرةً وقلوبا

Return, O orator of the free call which

Comforted free minds and hearts

أجيبك بعد الصمت حيناً وحسبما

دعوت إليه أن أكون مجيبا

I will answer you after a while of silence and as

You called me to be a respondent

وقفت وما أدري أعدُّ حوادثاً

تدور أمامي أم أعد ذنوبا

I stood not knowing whether to count misfortunes

Spinning before me or sins

تحملت عن قومي نصيباً من الأسى

ولم أرجُ من أجر الجهاد نصيبا

I have borne from my people a share of sorrow

Yet I did not gain a share of the reward of jihad

وأمعنتُ في غيب المقادير علَّني

أرى فرجاً للأمّتين قريبا

And I pondered the unseen decrees so that

I may see relief soon for the two nations

وليس بمغنٍ أمةً خصبُ أرضها

إذا لم يكن خلق الرجال خصيبا

A fertile land cannot avail a nation

If the nature of its men is not fertile

تنازع قومي اليوم جنداً وقادة

فلم أر إلا سالباً وسليبا

My people contend today troops and leaders

Yet I did not see but a usurper and a plunderer

مبادئ أحزاب أرى أم منافعاً

توالت صنوفاً بينهم وضروبا

Do I see party principles or benefits?

That have varied between them kinds and sorts

تقضت حروب العالمين ولم أزل

أرى بين أبناء البلاد حروبا

The wars of the two worlds have ended, yet I still

See wars between the sons of the countries

بقومي على قومي استعان غريمهم

فصال شمالاً واستطال جنوبا

By my people, their enemy sought help

So he split the north and lengthened the south

فمن لهمُ بالمنُفذِ الأمر حازماً

إذا لم يطيعوا ناقداً وحسيبا

Who then can decisively execute the command

If they do not obey a critic and a reckoner

يردُّهمُ بعد القطيعة والنوى

رفاقاً كما يلقى العليل طبيبا

To return them after estrangement and intention

Comrades as the sick meets a doctor

هنالِكَ مكفول لمصرَ مصيرها

كما شئتُ فيها شاعراً وخطيبا

There lies guaranteed Egypt’s fate

As I wished, a poet and an orator
