1. شكوت كما يشكو نوى الألف طائرُ

    ولمت وكم لام الأحبةَ شاعرُ

    I complain as the lonely bird complains

    And I stopped complaining as the poet stopped

  2. وإني لمظلوم وما أنا ظالمٌ

    وإني لمهجور وما أنا هاجرُ

    I am wronged but I am no wrongdoer

    I am abandoned but did not flee

  3. وما ليَ لا أُجزى بما أنا ناظم

    وما لي لا أُجزى بما أنا ناثرُ

    Why am I not rewarded for my poetry?

    Why am I not rewarded for my prose?

  4. بأي كتاب يُحرم الرزق عاملٌ

    وينعم سكير ويلهو مقامرُ

    What book denies the worker his wages

    And favors the drunkard and the gambler?

  5. ويهدم بيت الفضل والعلم والندى

    وتبنى كأمثال البروج المقابرُ

    It destroys the house of merit, knowledge and light

    And builds tombs like the starry towers

  6. وتكسو العظامَ الباليات زخارفٌ

    وتقذف بالصخر الوجوه النواضرُ

    It adorns the crumbling bones with splendor

    And hurls rocks at radiant faces

  7. إذا متُ محروماً فأيُّ موحِّدٍ

    أحق بما حاز الغنيُّ المكاثرُ

    When I die deprived, which monotheist

    Has more right than the prosperous gloaters?

  8. وما بيَ تقصير وما بيَ علةٌ

    ولكنَّ مَن وكلتمُ بِيَ صاغرُ

    I am no slacker, no affliction in me

    But He who assigned me is wanting

  9. أيُعطى اليهودُ الوفر وهو مخاطرٌ

    ويعطى الأجيرُ الأجر وهو محاذرُ

    The Jews get abundance and they are treacherous

    The hireling gets his wages and he is cautious

  10. أتتنيَ بالعزل المناعي وما انتهت

    لديَّ بما ولَّيتموني البشائرُ

    You removed me with no justification

    And the good tidings you gave me never ended

  11. أكان كثيراً أجرُ عامين فيهما

    أُلاقي الذي لاقىَ القنَوط المقامرُ

    Were two years’ wages too much

    For one who endured the gambler’s despair?

  12. ولي عندكم عشرون عاماً طويلة

    مسخرة فيها القوى والضمائرُ

    For twenty long years I was devoted

    With all my soul and conscience

  13. أعزلٌ وحرمانٌ وبالنفس ما بها

    من الصرب والبلغار إني لصابرُ

    Dismissed, deprived, yet in myself

    I have the patience of Serbia and Bulgaria

  14. تَنَازعني علمي بأني بسؤدد

    جدير وعلمي أن حظي عاثرُ

    My knowledge that I merit well

    Battles my knowledge that my luck is cursed

  15. إذا كان إخلاصي لقومي جنايةً

    عليَّ فإني صافح عنه غافرُ

    If my loyalty to my people is a crime

    Then I greet pardon with forgiveness

  16. وإن كان محظوراً عليّ تلمُّسي

    نجاة فهل لي أن تألمت حاظرُ

    If my aspirations are forbidden to me

    Can I be blamed for my silent sorrow?

  17. وكم بت أسترعي الكواكب ساهراً

    حماكم إذا ما خالس الملك غادرُ

    How often I stayed up with the stars

    To guard you while the king slept

  18. ملأت بريد العام كتباً إليكم

    فكيف استقرت فيه تلك الدوائرُ

    I filled the government’s mails with letters to you

    So why did those papers settle there?

  19. أسائلكم عنها وأعلم أنها

    جواهركم إن أعوزتكم جواهرُ

    I ask you about them though I know

    They are your precious gems when you lack gems

  20. يريدون إكراهي على أن أعيبكم

    فأخسركم فيما أنا اليوم خاسرُ

    They want me to find fault with you

    And so lose you at my present loss

  21. ومن للأمين الحرِّ إن لم يكن له

    أمير نصير أو وزير مؤازرُ

    Without an emir or minister to help

    What can the honest guardian do?

  22. ولم أتخذ من ودِّكم غير عدة

    كما اتخذ الزاد القليل المسافرُ

    I wanted from your affection only provision

    As the traveler packs some little food

  23. سأخرج من واديكم الرحب مرغماً

    تراوحني ذكراكم وتباكرُ

    I shall leave your wide valley unwillingly

    Memories of you jostling me

  24. ويا ليتني إن كان لا بُدَّ من أذى

    أسيرٌ جريح أو غريب مهاجرُ

    Oh, would that when harm is inevitable

    I may go as a wounded prisoner or exile
